Description

Field of Glory II Medieval is a turn-based tactical game set in the High Middle Ages from 1040 AD to 1270 AD.

This was the heyday of the mounted knight. Armoured from head to toe by the later 12th century, European knights rode heavy horses in tight formation, and delivered a devastating charge with couched lances.

Major themes of the period include the struggles of the Kings of France against the Kings of England and the German Emperors, the English wars of conquest or attempted conquest against the Welsh, Scots and Irish, the Baltic Crusades and the Mongol invasion of Eastern Europe. With dynastic struggles and rebellions by powerful nobles thrown into the mix, Europe was in an almost constant state of war.

Field of Glory II Medieval allows you to take command of the armies of the Anglo-Saxons and Normans, post-conquest England, France, Germany, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Low Countries, the Free Cantons, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Bohemia, Poland, the Teutonic Knights, the pagan Old Prussians and Lithuanians, Russia, Hungary, the Cumans, Volga Bulgars and Mongols in an endless variety of battles and campaigns set in 11th-13th century North and Central Europe.

Lead your chosen army and its named generals to victory in set-piece historical battles or "what-if" custom battle situations against an AI or human opponent. Choose your forces from historically accurate orders of battle allowing all of the options and variations that would be available to a real general of that nation at any date during the era.

Field of Glory II Medieval has more than 100 beautiful and historically accurate fully animated troop units, each with multiple variations to bring out the colour and variety of the era. Watch the swords flash and the arrows fly! Count the cost of victory or defeat as bodies litter the battlefield.

Field of Glory II Medieval has a campaign system that concentrates on the battles, and allows real strategic decisions without time spent moving armies around a strategic map. Each battle is vital to your progress. Your army will gain experience and elan as it goes from victory to victory against your enemies and their allies.

There are four historically-based campaigns covering major conflicts of the era: The Angevin Empire, The Northern Crusades, Alexander Nevsky and the Mongol Invasions. There is also a sandbox campaign system that allows you to lead any nation (and their historical allies) against any other nation (and their allies) – giving thousands of permutations.

Victory will require determination and tactical mastery.

  • Accurate simulation of battle in the High Middle Ages.
  • 29 nations and factions covering North and Central Europe from 1040 AD to 1270 AD.
  • 57 different army lists allowing historically realistic armies for each of these factions at different dates during the period. In addition armies can include contingents from historical allies. This gives tens of thousands of permutations. You will never run out of new matchups to try.

  • Historical scenarios covering key engagements of the period on an epic scale. • Custom Battle system allows unlimited “what-if” scenarios using historically realistic armies from carefully researched army lists, on realistic computer generated terrain maps. Armies covered include Anglo-Saxons, Normans, post-conquest English, French, Imperial and Feudal German, Lowland Scottish, Highland/Isles Scottish, North and South Welsh, Irish, Anglo-Irish, Low Countries, Free Cantons, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Bohemian, Polish, Teutonic Knights, Old Prussians, Lithuanians, Russians, Hungarians, Cumans, Volga Bulgars and Mongols. 12 selectable scenarios include: Open Battle, Enemy expecting Reinforcements, Own side expecting Reinforcements, Flank March, Rearguard, Advance Guard, Kill the King, Escort Baggage Train, Own Side Defending, Enemy Defending, Relieve Besieged Fortress, Enemy Relieve Besieged Fortress.
  • Quick Battle mode allows you to quickly select from 65 pre-set matchups between historical opponents.
  • Campaign mode allows you to play through historically-based campaign scenarios or “what-if” campaigns between any two opposing nations with thousands of permutations. Each victory increases the experience and elan of your core units. You can give each of them its own unique unit name. Quick to resolve strategic decisions allow you to go straight from one battle to the next without any delay.
  • Random map generator produces an infinite variety of historically realistic battlefield maps for custom battles and campaigns.
  • Classic turn-based, tile based gameplay.

Fantastic

This is my first Fields of Glory game and I love it. Will your men hold the line? When should I send in the reserves? Will the flanking maneuver work? The Historical battles are fun, but the Campaign is the real treat. You have forces that carry over from battle to battle win or lose, And there is a random generator campaign where you can set the parameters and the forces to your liking, with a natural ramping up size and difficulty of battles (if you so choose). I have one criticism, the writing in this is incredibly small, to the point I can barely read the words. For a game like this, where reading is a big part of the experience, its a huge negative. I was annoyed enough to take what should have easily been a five star game to four stars. Regrettable. This is my favorite purchase in the last year. Maybe in the last couple of years. Smooth gameplay and UI, great sound effects with the roar of battle and people yelling as they charge or break. A fantastic battle system under the hood of course (similar to Pike and Shot). I eagerly await more Medieval Armies and Campaigns.

Great, approachable wargame

FoG2:Medieval is my first title in the serie and my first wargame of this complexity. Up to now the experience has been fairly smooth, with a tutorial that ensures you go over the basics and multiple difficulty levels that also catter to the uninitiated. Yes the interface and tutorials can be rough a time, but for such a title, coming from a smaller developer it is perfectly understandable and I would say above par for the tactical wargame niche. This is a different game than most gamers are used to and some things won't make sense at first (like why can't my knights attack this adjacent unit; why did I just lose control of these guys, why can't I break off from this melee, etc...). But it comes with a gorgeous and very detailed 212 page manual. Yeah that's right, if you aren't interested in reading the rules you will be at a severe disadvantage, the game will remain puzzling and you will be severely limiting your fun factor. But keep in mind that the game does not force you too. I've been able to seize some victories on smaller engagement at the lower difficulty levels having mostly just read the historical section of the rulebook. Keep in mind that this game is the computer rendition of a tabletop miniature wargame of the same name. And from reviews I've read from wargamers, this is not a "inspired by" or dumbed down version but instead the real deal. This is the complete Field of Glory experience but with no miniature painting and a lot of the maths figured out for you. If you like tactical fights, taking your time to ponder the best strategy and historical authenticity, then don your armor, get on your horse and join the fight!

Great medieval wargame

FoG II engiene was used for medieval battles with polished graphics, UI (game looks really aesthetic) and new medieval soundtrack. Gameplay is similar to FoG II - realistic, but no overly complicated battles and simple campaigns, now with medieval flavor - much stronger cavalry, crossbowmen, longbowmen etc. Game has well researched, non-nonsense army lists (so no [faction name] [troop type] units just to make armies artificially "diverse"). At the moment We know that DLCs will be regional, so they will be limited in scope in comparison to FoG II, but more detailed with more battles, campaigns and armies from single region (e.g. first DLC will be covering western Mediterranean, every FoG II DLC was covering entire "map").

Finally! Something for that tact-itch...

Starting with Total War: Shogun 2, I've always had a love-for and issue-with real-time and tabletop tactics. For me, I always felt like the bottleneck in my army composition; my reflexes were never good enough to manage a highly mobile army, and I was always outplayed when trying to use something heavier and more static -- I was always there as the weak link stopping myself from using the tactics that I wanted to and having more fun and engaging with games from a period I found captivating. Field of Glory II Medieval has been a near perfect solution for this issue. Field of Glory II Medieval is effectively a 'micro-less' tactics game which more than makes up for the lack of actions-per-minute with a deep and constantly engaging combat system. I feel like my horizons have been totally opened up from charges, breaks, and routes to include: push-and-pull, evasion, cohesion, pursuit, skirmishing, direction, and so on. Taking this deep but intuitive system and combining it with a time of unit diversity and army composition that I don't think has been matched in any other period, where you have every variation in armour, manoeuvrability, and stopping power, I think I'll struggle to go back to playing more traditional games. Content-wise, the game caters to many needs and values: if you are wanting to jump into a quick scenario that will let you experiment with an army you wouldn't normally pick then quick battles are great; the historical campaigns are fulfilling and allow you to tailor an army to better suit a specific tactic across multiple engagements, or you can fulfilll your 'what-if' scenarios across many historically replicated battles. I highly recommend the game to those who feel like your lack of micro-skills can prevent you from making the most of traditional real-time strategy titles, or for those who want to learn a bit more about interesting cultures and the unique ways they fought the wars that helped shape our borders today.

Great table top war game

I loved the original FoG2 so when i seen this on sale i had to have it. Great game but has s few issues . Like archers can retreat safely out of a cavalry charge every time without being disrupted . Minor gripe maybe. Otherwise I really enjoy it and love watching the competitive games too.
