Description
Field of Glory II is a turn-based tactical game set during the Rise of Rome from 280 BC to 25 BC

The game that brought the fun and excitement of the tabletop experience to digital form is back. Developed by legendary designer Richard Bodley Scott in a completely new 3D engine, Field of Glory is ready to set new standards in computer wargaming.

Field of Glory II allows you to fight large or small battles for or against Rome, or between the other nations who are as yet unaware of the Roman threat, or what-if battles between nations that never actual came into conflict historically, but might have done if the course of history had been different.

Take command of a huge variety of armies employing vastly different tactical doctrines. Lead your chosen army and its named generals to victory in set-piece historical battles or "what-if" custom battle situations against an AI or human opponent.

Victory will require determination and tactical mastery!

FEATURES

  • Accurate simulation of Ancient battle in the last three centuries of the pre-Christian era.
  • 86 historically accurate units, built from fully animated 3D troop models, each with many variants. These allow Field of Glory II to represent the full range of troop-types and tactical doctrines that make this era one of the most interesting to wargamers and military historians. To name just a few, there are Roman legionaries before and after the reforms of Marius, Greek hoplite and Carthaginian African spearmen, Hellenistic pike phalanxes, thureophoroi spearmen and xystophoroi lancers, Gallic warbands, Skythian horse archers, Sarmatian lancers, Roman, Carthaginian, Greek and Gallic spear-armed cavalry, war elephants, Celtic and Indian chariots, scythed chariots, a wealth of light troops and many many more.
  • 12 Historical scenarios covering key engagements of the period on an epic scale. These include Bagradas 255 BC, Trebia 218 BC, Cannae 216 BC, Ilipa 206 BC, Zama 202 BC, Magnesia 190 BC, Pydna 168 BC, Chaironeia 86 BC, Tigranocerta 69 BC, Bibracte 58 BC, Carrhae 53 BC and Thapsus 46 BC. The player can play as either side.
  • Custom Battle system allows unlimited “what-if” scenarios using historically realistic armies from carefully researched army lists, on realistic computer generated terrain maps. Armies covered include Romans, Carthaginians, Hellenistic Kingdoms (Macedon, Seleucids, Ptolemaic Egypt etc.), Gauls, Ancient Britons, Galatians, Spanish, Numidians, Spartacus’s Slave Revolt, Thracians, Skythians, Sarmatians, Parthians, Indians and lots more.
  • Campaign mode allows you to rewrite history as you play through the battlefield careers of some of ancient history’s greatest generals, or war with any ancient nation against any other. Each victory increases the experience and elan of your core units. Quick to resolve strategic decisions allow you to go straight from one battle to the next without any delay.
  • Random map generator produces an infinite variety of historically realistic battlefield maps for custom battles and campaigns. Scenarios include open battle, pursuit, awaiting reinforcements, enemy awaiting reinforcements, flank march, rearguard action, advance guard, remove the head, and protect the baggage.
  • Classic turn-based, tile based gameplay.
  • Easy to use interface, hard to master gameplay.
  • Cohort-sized units. Battles can range from a few units to as many as 80 units per side.
  • Named generals who can influence combat and morale of units under their command.
  • Single player and multiplayer battle modes.
  • Effective AI makes sound tactical decisions.
  • 6 difficulty levels allow the challenge to increase as you develop your battlefield skills.
  • Numerous different unit organisations, combat capabilities and tactical doctrines allow full representation of tactical differences and developments through the period.
  • Mod friendly game system with built-in map editor.
  • Multiplayer mode allows historical scenarios and “what-if” scenarios to be played by two players using Slitherine’s easy to use PBEM server.

A very good historical warfare game

I nearly gave Field of Glory 4 stars, so call it 4 1/2. I am an historian and love playing turn based hex style war and strategy games on the computer. As a child all I had were Avalon Hill style board games to fill this need, and not enough friends who shared that hobby. GOG has reconnected me with many of my favorite computer games from years past. Field of Glory II is new to me. I was put off by the price, especially of the several DLC's. When I was notified from my wish list that it was on sale, I jumped. And am very glad that I did. The game plays well, without any problems on my up to date laptop computer. The AI is aggressive and makes the battles interesting and a challenge at the higher difficulties. The graphics are nothing fancy, but the scale of detail for the unit types, covering many cultures and time periods, is outstanding. I do wish there were more campaigns with the basic game and would like to see some type of reward system or unit upgrade as the unit continues thru each stage of a campaign. Sort of like Panzer Corps. Today I ordered two of the DLC's to continue my enjoyment. I look forward to playing as the Seleucid's! Where else could I say that?

DLC spam

Game is nice, but browsing through the in game menu you will notice that majority of options are unavailable without buying DLC. This is so immersion braking business strategy. I would prefer to simply hide unavailable menu options. I can already see them in the shop.

One of the best ancient warfare games

This game is like chess. Easy to learn but difficult to master. Under the layer of basic rules there is plenty of room for deep strategy. Some say that there is a luck involved but I'd say it's rather a calculated risk that you must take every tun. Really, every move, every decision you make counts! You will face tough hard decisions during the game - should I try to encircle him on the left flank but risking being outflanked on the right? Should I try to secure my position first on that hill and disturb his front lines from the distance or try to cut through his center to get the general? Should I put more emphasis on numerous light units or limited number of heavy veteran troops? You can have very limited chances for your move to succeed but if succeed it can start a chain reaction on opponent's morale and you can win the battle by evern the simplest maneuver. The game has been designed by fanatics of historical warfare so it's really historically accurate. The game design is simple and elegant. Free of bugs.

ancient warfare at its best

For everyone that knows a little about ancient warfare, this is the closest that it can get on a video game. it hasnt a statigic level (*) and is based on tailored battles to tell a story of famous generals or factions and armies, from Hannibal to Ceasar, from rome to byzantines and all between . the community moding support is fantastic, produsing set ups and scenarios of more famous battles or generals stories. Have you seen a historical documentary of a battle? remember the formations and the generals desisive decision? here you can reproduce all of these. now, while the graphics seemed old, the tabletop style is captivated and manage to create a familiar feeling . sound serves its purpose but dont expect AAA levels ( blends with the graphics though ) the gameplay is deep, unforgiven or steep at times but fair. been a seasoned total war gamer and moder for over 15 years, field of glory2 felt like a natural evolution gameplay wise. * if you like turn based tactical warfare games AND a stratigical level on your wars and factions managment then you will have to compine it with field of glory empires, a seperate game. Do that and you will have a more sofisticated ala total war sanbox experience. the transition between games is smooth, takes 4 mouse clicks and less time than a battle on any newer total war to load. the price may seems high but gog always have sales and then it is a bargain. compine with field of glory empires it is a gem.

Very good, but has its downs

Incredible mechanics and well though out battle system. Strategies in battles get deep, very enjoyable, I have no issues there. my gripes are mostly with minor things, like not being able to reassign hot keys. camera movement is a little too limited. zooming out to top down view can only be viewed on the side, and I don't see a reason why it can't rotate around. etc...
