Description
This DLC showcases the lightning-fast ascension of Persia from a humble kingdom to one of the largest empires history has ever known. Initially, as Cyrus the Great, you’ll have to overthrow powerful neighbors, like Media, your former liege, Ancient Babylon and its mighty cities, or Lydia, ruled by Croesus, a man rich beyond dreams.
But that’s not all, as Athens and Sparta are vying for supremacy over the Hellenes world, and soon the Aechemenid Empire and the western nations will be on a collision course. These three have a low chance to stay at peace for long, so be always on the lookout for opportunities.
If you prefer to play as the underdog, a certain modest city in Italy might perhaps be a surprising contender. Or perhaps the young city of Carthage, its new empire still far from assured. Opportunities abound!

Regional decisions

Each nation will get a new set of tools to further its goals, namely regional decisions. And because sometimes you might want to perform a certain action in a certain location, we are providing you with the opportunity to federate some barbarians, form up a new colony, force march an army or even prospect for natural resources! But that’s not all, because in addition to the 15 decisions every nation can use, Persia, Athens and Sparta have a few decisions unique to them, adding to the historical accuracy of the game. Intervening in Hellenes affair, declaring the Olympic Games or recruiting mercenary hoplites, to name but a few, will all be possible actions.

Impediments and Boons

The new campaign starts two centuries before the Empires campaign. To keep the experience focused on the important nations of the time, while at the same time adding replayability to all games (including the base game), we have added numerous peripheral regional impediments and boons. These are special natural sites that will often hamper development in numerous ways, until you fix the issue (if that’s even possible). Boons are the positive flipside of impediments and are rarer but will make certain regions even more unique. To give a few examples of each, you might encounter Impenetrable Forests, Nauseous Swamps, or Bandits, or might be blessed in some select regions by rich soil, an oasis or a sacred grove. With more than 80 Impediments and Boons, expect the unexpected and that no two games will be the same!

Special content

As you might have guessed, the major nations of the period have received special treatment. Don’t expect to play Persia as you would play Athens or Lydia, this is simply not possible! Each nation, through events, missions, national modifiers, special units and specific buildings, will play differently. We know that many of you enjoyed the varied regional content in the Empires base game. We have taken the same approach here to deliver a whole new gaming challenge. Add to that regional decisions and impediments, and you’ll need to devise new strategies to win the game.

Fantastic grand strategy game

This is simply a wonderful expansion to a great grand strategy game. Starting with Cyrus the great and his rapid expansion of the Achaemenid empire, the game gives you rare insight into the ancient world before the rise of Alexander and later the Romans. I was looking for exactly something like this but did not expect the game mechanics to be so well thought out and incorporated. The focus is on empire building and management, rather than tactical battles. Although if you also own Field of glory II you can make it more about the battles themselves if you so choose. I find that the game is brilliant as it is and feel no need for complete control during battles. Since I spend a lot of time on region and province management (automation options available in-game), I am completely satisfied with simply building great armies that will do well in the automated battles and associated rolls. The national and regional decisions that allow for various bonuses and penalties in loyalty, trade, administrative burden etc are a very nice touch and the regional structures you build will influence which decisions you can make from time to time. The trade system with trade distance, the various trade goods and bonuses is also excellent and well described in the extensive manual. And then there are the various historical decisions, objectives and reports which add further flavour and help you as a player understand how and why this great empire was built and ruled. Thoroughly impressive, all of it. If you are bored of the very basic strategic layer in the Total war series (and its near complete focus on battles and cool animations) this could be something for you. It definitely hits home for me at least!

Hey, that other guy is silly

Purposefully putting this on my wishlist to piss off any weirdos who take issue with very basic changes to historic nomenclature in academia. I'm telling you this as someone studying for my master's with an intent to practice seriously in the feel: Go touch grass. Maybe go to Mass if you're so upset about Christ not being in Christmas or whatever lol :'(

Yet another Christian ignoramus crybaby.

The reviewer named cyberlawusa is utterly ignorant of the very widely known and standard term B.C.E. for designating historical eras which preceded the common era (C.E.) which has been in use for many decades. It's never surprising but always amusing and somewhat disconcerting to note how ignorant and uninformed, or ill-informed, people who are functionally illiterate are as a result of reading only one book, namely that book of fairy tales known as the Bible. Read something besides that book, bro.

A woke title = no buy

I've played enough of this game by reading the title! They're calling it BCE (before common era) because BC (before Christ) isn't woke enough. I'm not even religious but I'm sick of political correctness. Keep PC away from my PC!
