Fantastic grand strategy game
This is simply a wonderful expansion to a great grand strategy game. Starting with Cyrus the great and his rapid expansion of the Achaemenid empire, the game gives you rare insight into the ancient world before the rise of Alexander and later the Romans. I was looking for exactly something like this but did not expect the game mechanics to be so well thought out and incorporated. The focus is on empire building and management, rather than tactical battles. Although if you also own Field of glory II you can make it more about the battles themselves if you so choose. I find that the game is brilliant as it is and feel no need for complete control during battles. Since I spend a lot of time on region and province management (automation options available in-game), I am completely satisfied with simply building great armies that will do well in the automated battles and associated rolls. The national and regional decisions that allow for various bonuses and penalties in loyalty, trade, administrative burden etc are a very nice touch and the regional structures you build will influence which decisions you can make from time to time. The trade system with trade distance, the various trade goods and bonuses is also excellent and well described in the extensive manual. And then there are the various historical decisions, objectives and reports which add further flavour and help you as a player understand how and why this great empire was built and ruled. Thoroughly impressive, all of it. If you are bored of the very basic strategic layer in the Total war series (and its near complete focus on battles and cool animations) this could be something for you. It definitely hits home for me at least!
