Field of Glory: Empires

I can't stand the game. It's not a 1 star since it runs well and does what it is supposed to do but frankly, it's a board game marginally more complex than Risk but with none of the simplistic charm of such. Somehow it manages to both be boringly simplistic where it needs more depth and boringly complex (not complicated) where it needs to be more simple. Ultimately I read the other reviews and expected a better game. It is not that game. Probably won't go back and play a third round; certainly regret purchasing the DLC and wasting even more money.

A quality game! The AI works extremely well and so do the mechanics of the game. The devs are clearly fans of both playing historical-based games with an eye for maximising realism in a historical game and ensuring that all aspects of the mechanics of the game work as they should. This game has a HUGE amount of depth! And is completely free of leftist WOKE identity politics. In my opinion, this game stands head and shoulders above any Paradox game and far, far above any Total War game, whose quality has dropped off a cliff in the past decade. The things I don't like about the game are: 1. There are many occurances of both broken English and typos within descriptions. This can be very frustrating when you cannot even get the gist of some of these fragments of language that the devs have used. They needed to use a professional language editor!! 2. Some events have poorly explained consequences or completely unknown consequences and are perhaps there to only add 'flavour', but who knows? 3. The graphics are dated and bland. And I mean like early 2000s dated and bland! 4. There are only a VERY limited number of soundtracks on repeat. 5. The UI is not very user friendly in terms of the size of the font - it's tiny!! Despite these problems, I recommend the game, but not at full price. I'll be keeping a close eye on any future releases from this company.

The designer of Age of Empires, Bruce Shelley, once said that if a game is not fun in the first 15 minutes of play, it is worthless. This FOGE is no fun, except, possibly for a few masochists. Unbalanced unplayable factions, and huge programmed cheats render this unplayable. And: the option of playing the battles on a group of mostly flat squares, (must purchase another pathetic excuse for a game), is pathetically stupid and was surpassed a century ago by the Civil War Generals, and a dozen other early games, that creatively utilized hexes, ridge/mountain heights, and river barriers. Bought game on sale, no big deal, it is uninstalled. Back to the Total Wars.
