Description
Fates of Ort is a retro inspired fantasy RPG with a focus on strategic action and a story driven by your decisions. It is a tale of sacrifice and difficult choices, in a world under threat of annihilation by the avaricious force of Consumption magic.

Magic is powerful, but it is not free. Every spell you cast requires a little bit of your life energy to spark it. Cast enough spells and you will extinguish your very soul. This means you need to be strategic when fighting, balancing the cost of magic with the risk of taking damage from your enemies.

How each spell manifests in the world depends on what divine power you choose to combine it with. For example, the Evoke Force spell will cause the ground to erupt with a series of sharp ice crystals, summon a thunderous lightning strike, or barrage the ground with a meteor shower – all depending on what the spell is combined with.

Use the magic spells at your disposal to defeat the demons spilling out from the underworld. In Ort, time is frozen whenever you stand still. This means you have the opportunity to plan your attacks and be strategic.

Like any RPG, you will be slaying enemies to collect loot and experience. The items you pick up will improve your magical abilities, though some come with curses... As you level up, you will learn additional magic spells to use against your enemies.

Ort is varied and expansive, an open world for you to explore. Choose the order of the quests you pursue, or just explore to meet new characters. The final battle is available whenever you choose, but... Are you strong enough?

Play as a novice mage, forced to take on the responsibility of saving the world and those that are important to you. Quests can be completed to gain access to new areas, save and unlock allies, gain items and powers, and more. Replays are encouraged because small decisions can have permanent and significant consequences, leading to different game outcomes.

  • Learn and use 12 magic spells, and combine them with the three elements for different effects
  • Time stops when you stand still - take advantage of this to plan your attacks
  • Use your life energy to weave spells - be strategic in your fighting
  • Explore various biomes around the world of Ort and meet a diverse set of characters
  • Atmospheric soundtrack composed by Chris Gray
  • Pursue truly optional quest lines, and make difficult choices between which characters to save
  • Save the world, or rule it as a force of evil

Very good

I've played it and finished it in 6 and half an hour. And I've skipped 60% of the world and quest. I just rush the main quest without really knowing it :v First, the universe, the narration is perfect, I love how it's described, I love the story. Second, you fell so free in that small universe. You do the choice you want, there won't be anygameover. The vilain is not a super vilain who wants to destroy the world for no reason, I find it pretty clever the way he explain himself. About the gameplay, the game is pretty simple, you can choose to rundown the game and finish the mainquest at lvl 7, but I strongly recommand you to not. I suggest you to explore first. Finish some quest. I did it because I knew that i would have take another save with the "hardcore mod A bit sad with some character, you have a sister that died at the beginning and you can apparently revive her, but... Well... It's my sister okay but I don't really care. The fact is that some character are too quickly presented and you don't remember who is who and don't have any affection toward them. Anyway it's still amusing to play this game the magic is so fuuun with lot of combination, you have the feeling to be very powerful and break the world. Thank you for reading

Surprisingly Good

Really enjoyed my time with this one. I hardly ever finish games and was able to complete this one. I thought the open-world-that's-not-too-big-and-too-empty was very well done. I never felt like I was wasting time running around. The side quests were fun. My only complaints are that the final boss section was way, way harder than the rest of the game and that, for some reason, I never unlocked any achievements. Definitely recommend this one though if you're a fan of ARPGs or 90s console RPGs.

I beat the game, I never finish games...

I'm not great at reviewing stuff, but i'm 44 years old, been gaming since age 7 and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Migrated to PC at 14 and never really looked back. Number of games I have completed? IDK, maybe 10? I get distracted, lose interest, it becomes a chore, pick a reason, adhd? whatever it is, I rarely complete a game. I played this one to the end. I feel bad for how little I paid for it.

not great, not terrible

The game is fun and somewhat original, but also repetitive and not very challenging. You travel a pixelated isometric environment depicting kind of science-fantasy kingdom, you cast spells that cost you hp (or not, depending on one), you work your way thru different areas in rouge-like fashion and you decide what new spell to choose with each level. It's kind of charming, but sadly the charm washes off few hours into the game. Quests are easy, storyline and NPCs are ok, but again - nothing special. Fun game for few evenings if you bought it discounted.

Interesting, but buggy.

Cute retro RPG with interesting mechanics and enough content to buy on discount. However, rendered mostly unplayable by a few bugs: (M1 Mac) - Scaling & mouse coordinates is buggy -- in the game world (but not on the UI) the mouse position doesn't match what the game thinks is under the cursor, so it becomes impossible to move or interact. This only happens at certain sizes of game window, including full screen. - Random hangs when switching areas. - Hangs that freeze the game on busy screens -- but the clock keeps ticking during the hang! Since this usually happens during combat... the outcomes are usually poor. Alas, too frustrating to continue.
