Did you ever want to reroute power to the shields, set phasers to stun,
or even eject the warp core? Well, now you can! In FTL, you experience the
atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a
dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with
multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down
your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape,
power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the
fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation
roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure
through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.
FTL's complex strategic gameplay allows you to give orders to your crew,
manage ship power distribution, and choose weapon targets in the heat of
battle. You will encounter unique alien lifeforms and technology. You can
upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien
races. Be the Captain you want: hundreds of text based encounters will
force you to make tough decisions. In the randomized galaxy each
play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your
decisions. Each time you play another challenging session of FTL: Faster Than Light, it won't be quite the same.
Unlimited adventures in the vast depths of unpredictable space.
A new randomized galaxy to explore each time you start a new game.
Quick play sessions (from 5 to about 90 minutes) will allow you to add that spaceship commander feeling to any of your days.
A simple FTL game can take 5 minutes - or hours. Dependes on your luck and skill.
A bit difficult to understand in the beginning, but once you get used to the mechanics, you'll have big fun.
Worths your money!
You can play Faster Than Light without digging in manuals or wikis. There's a short tutorial, but then off you go. Exploring the world, learning from mistakes and trying different approaches is an essential part of the game. You'll start over a lot and after some experience you'll be able to win one journey in 3 hours. That being said, you see, that it's easy playing in the evening and also easy to stop and take a break after each encounter (which takes several minutes), which makes it attractive to everybody who's just seeking a little diversion. If you've got more time, then you can collect all in-game achievements, unlock every ship and subtype (and win). All in all, I had a good time playing this, although the game can become a little repetitive after you've got the hang of it and want to unlock everything (e.g. destroying 1000 enemy ships).
Clear recommendation, if you like roguelike games.
Don't buy it, if you want polished visuals, cutscenes and a deep story - it's not there.
Okay, I have no clue what "Rogue-like-like" means... not in the slightest. But I've just gone through the nicely presented (and nicely paced, yet brief) tutorial and have now embarked on a dangerous mission - I cannot give details... it's in my contract as Captain. But I can tell you that I have saved several ships in distress, taught a bully ship a lesson, acquired some useful parts and supplies, freed a slave and welcomed him to my crew, and am still remaining ahead of the threat that is bent on my destruction! I love how this game plays... if this is what 'Rogue-Like' resembles, perhaps I should look more into these sorts of games.
Nonetheless, FTL is a delight to play. I have really come to 'know' each f my starting crew, and given them specific duties - thought they can and will multitask when needed. Great crew, great ship.. Super Game!
There are many expansion mods made by the community and, from what I've seen, it's fairly simple to make them to add - should you want to give more players - and yourself - more and more expandability and fun as you live amongst the stars on a real purpose of great importance to mankind!
I've played FTL for quite awhile, I've tried many different builds with many different luck variables and I can say with authority that beating the last boss is impossible, don't even bother.
It's a little known fact that you aren't actually meant to win, you just keep replaying forever, picking a new ship, assembling a superstar crew and growing attached to them and welling with pride when their skills or race unlock the "blue option" to solve problems, then watching them and their hopes and dreams get reduced to bits floating in open space, splattered against shredded metal and that crappy gun I forgot to sell at the last trade station.
It doesn't matter how well you're doing, how prepared you are, fighting the rebel flagship is like a toddler throwing mashed peas at the Terminator, you're going to die and restart and die ad nauseam like you're manning a Star Trek voyage consisting exclusively of red shirts, you're in limbo, this is your life.
I love it
When I first saw footage of this indie game I thought it looked dated but the gameplay is much more complex than the visuals make it out to be. I enjoy becoming addicted to this during the christmas break. Dont make the same rookie mistakes I made first time and run out of fuel.
