A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushed the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.
A unique sandbox FPS that allows you to complete your objectives in several different ways
Challenging A.I. that dynamically responds to your actions
Beautiful graphics, even by today’s standards, that can be upgraded even further by fan-made content
Good gunplay and ai(mostly), savepoints suck sometimes, a few bugs so far, and terrible vehicle controls. Playing on normal, but feels like hard or very hard in another game. Can't go in guns blazing, takes some thought.
Seriously, how this game plays and controls is very frustrating, like it's really, REALLY OLD.
Aiming is horrible, stance transition is horrible. When you're aiming, it cuts the sensitivity like half and you can't adjust it, so either your hip aim is too fast or your shoulder aim is too slow. And for some reason, leaning pulls you out of aiming, so you aim first and then lean (it's stupid).
Enemies can see you across the map, accurate from a thousand mile distance, bullet sponges and they somehow do more damage with the same gun you use. Quick shots as well, hitting you before their head even gets into frame.
Stamina sucks as well. It depletes too damn fast and recovers too slow, and doesn't significantly recharge unless you're standing still. You also move really slow, even with the sprint and switching to some weapons like the sniper rifle or rocket launcher slows you down even more.
Unlike later entries, at least until 3, stealth here is completely non-viable. The only stealth weapon you have is from an MP5 or machete. You can't even move around at a decent pace because they will hear you and investigate a mile away.
At least the story is engaging but it's too frustrating to enjoy that.
This is one tough game, and I kept getting handed my head a lot, but it was worth the trip. I keep going back to the various levels trying to find quicker or safer ways around the problems. This is probably the best ten bucks I've ever invested in a game.
Borrowed from a friend to see this praised game.
When I saw the graphics, I was like "WHAT THE HELL?!"
Checked the release date: OMG 2004, really?
The graphics are easily comaparable with shooters we ecnounter nowadays: like Modern Warfare, for example.
Apart from great graphics: gameplay is awesome, it sucks you deeply inside and won't let go. Not to mention the whole 'open-world' thing, which is just awesome, you can pass most missions in a variety of ways.
Story is good, but nothing omg awesome.
Graphics 10/10, Sound 8/10, Story 8/10, Immersion 12/10, Gameplay 10/10 and I'd say that for 10 bucks...
well, I can get it in Poland for 5 bucks... but without the redownloadability :| so I'll stick with GoG
