A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushed the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.
A unique sandbox FPS that allows you to complete your objectives in several different ways
Challenging A.I. that dynamically responds to your actions
Beautiful graphics, even by today’s standards, that can be upgraded even further by fan-made content
Gorgeous graphics, superb pacing, gameplay mechanics that never get sour, and an ai that doesn't coddle you. What more could you ask for? Oh, you want it to run on your pc? No problem! Crytek are officially the masters of optimization. Just get the game. Do yourself a favor.
Unfortunately this game is far too janky. I found myself constantly getting stuck at the tops of stairs and ladders, there are a lot of hitbox issues (e.g. there was a crashed helicopter inbetween me and a pair of enemies, but only one of the blades was actually between us, yet none of us could shoot each other), the AI is apparently omnipotent and incredibly accurate, you can't save the game manually (unless you use the developer console), etc. Not to mention the litany of minor bugs that only occurred the once (things like falling through an elevator floor, and getting stuck as a result and having to reload to 15 minutes prior because again, you can't save manually and I hadn't yet discovered that you can use the developer console to save.)
One really annoying part of all this is that the game seems to encourage extensive use of stealth, but this is just completely impossible on account of every enemy seemingly having X-ray vision. You have to instead play it like a much more bog standard FPS from this era which in my opinion is far less interesting, and takes a lot away from what this game could be.
What got me in the end was the crashes. I didn't have *loads* of crashes or anything, but I was sufficiently aggravated by the aforementioned problems to just give up after the second crash.
It's definitely a well designed game, especially for its age, but the execution is just really lacking, which is such a shame because it comes so close to being a really great game. The graphics are of course some of the best you'll see in a game this old.
First I was pissed because I always thought it's one of those generic FPSs and was so hard in comparison, then I realized, that it's a stealth game and began to like it. After a while playing on "normal", I realized, that it would get really hard later on and started again on easy. I actually enjoyed it and the only bad things are
a) that you get noticed in the bushes too fast in "normal" and have to lay down on the floor and rob all the time and pray not to get noticed, in easy it was ok
b) the end is disappointing. In the fight with Krieger you are locked in a tight room with him, lots of his minions and no real cover at all, which makes most stuff you learned in the game useless and for some reason, ignoring the others and shooting a few rounds in his leg did the trick for whatever reason while grenades to the head didn't do much. oO
In the final fight, the humans have a reaction time of about 0.01 seconds, which means, that they fire their rockets around the corner at you the moment they walked past it so you have reload and blindly throw grenades all over the place without any visual contact. The final confrontation afterwards was so short, that I barely noticed it.
I tried the Far Cry addon mod and it seemed nice, but crashed all the time on me, maybe it's more stable in Win7, I used WinXP.
Far Cry has been so enjoyable that I am compelled to add a review. From the first time I got into the sand buggy and raced wrecklessly across the beach while trying to negotiate another buggy and rockets from a patrol boat to running scared through the jungle I thouroughly enjoyed you, Far Cry. There was that one time when I ran up to that watchtower and threw a grenade in it and saw the merc bodies go flying off. Oh man, I was still smiling the next morning.
There was that segment, or maybe fifty of them, that I died in over and over and over, yet it just didn't get old. It was fun, amusing, challenging and entertaining every dang time. How do you do it Far Cry? How do you make it so much fun to win and lose all at once!?
Then I beat the game and did what any reasonable person would do, I immediately started over at max difficulty and got as far as I could go with a pistol before using another gun. Now, Far Cry, you must know that I am not a person who reads a book or watches a movie twice. But I'm glad I did this again, because I didn't realize that even the third time through I was still finding different ways to go about completing segments.
In all the ways you impressed me Far Cry you got me in one way I didn't ever expect. The scenic tropical island beaches, beautiful blue water and lush flora. I think I see a tropical island vacation coming next year.
