Description
A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushed the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.

With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.

Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.

It was pretty great. When it came out.

Far Cry. Interesting game. On the one hand it lead to Crysis, a truly unforgettable shooter, and on the other hand it lead to a shooter-RPG hybrid called Far Cry 2. But what is it as an individual title? It is primordial. My experience of Far Cry when I first played it (I dunno, around 2004?) was remarkably similar to my first experience of Crysis. (In fact my playthrough of FC probably informed my approach to Crysis entirely) That is to say, I crept around the islands engaging in Operation Flashpoint-range firefights. Far Cry doesn't have a stealth mechanic. At least, I don't think it does, not during the opening sunlit levels. I insisted on crouching and sneaking around behind bushes for dozens of minutes, just because I loved the graphics, the atmosphere, and the setting (which at the time was heavily reminiscent of the GoT of the early 00s; LOST) but I was often spied by enemies through those bushes if my route of self-denial took me into their vision cones. Regardless, I created hours and hours of fun distraction for myself and loved exploring the lush, beautiful island environments. I had a blast, I see the more glowing reviews are remembering this moment too, but in 2019 I can assert for you, potential buyer, that it is no longer such a blast in this sense. Why? Because Crysis does it better. If you want to play this game like a kind of poor man's Halo, you can. If you want to do what I did and try to turn it into a first person sneaker, you kind of can (see above). If you want it to be a really great game, in the context of it's genre as it has grown into since release, you won't get what you expect. I heartily recommend Crysis, an all-time classic, and Far Cry 2, which I (maybe controversially) consider to be the best game related to this original title (no games were made after Far Cry 2, as far as I'm concerned). I do not think Far Cry is going to be as good as the more contemporary titles that are available to us in 2019.

'Where did he go?'

Far cry doesn't pretend to be anything else than an FPS game. Story plays like a B-movie. Sound is OK. Soundtrack is nothing special. But what it does nail down is gameplay. Instead of being able to quick-save and quick-load all the time like any game out there. There is checkpoints, usually around where your current objective is. This is what makes Far cry shine. It actually get difficult. It's actually hard! In some points (3-5?) you will get 'stuck'. Usually it's many enemies you have to combat at the same time. But every time you get that last kill using the last round in your rifle... It's damn gratifying. But Far cry is no means a have to play game or a classic. Recommended to anyone that enjoys FPS-games.

Re-enabling Quicksave / Quickload works

If you have butterfingers or don't like the "save only at checkpoints" design decision, you can simply run the game in developper mode (by editing the icon properties once i.e. right click the icon, select properties and add < -devmode> AFTER the final quote of the path/filename without the '<' and '>') after having edited the .../Far Cry/DevMode.lua file by adding the two lines Input:BindCommandToKey("#Game:Save('Quicksave')","f5",1); Input:BindCommandToKey("#Game:Load('Quicksave')","f9",1); Choose the f-keys and filename you like and add the lines after any previous definitions for those keys. Drawback : in DevMode the game will give you access to all levels, even the ones you have not yet reached - but you will be reasonable :-). For me this greatly improves an already great game.

Gloriously difficult!

Far Cry is a game that really brings out the good in Crytek of 2004, easy on the eyes, voice acting at it's best, and that character you play as, that makes you feel in his shoes. Now you may be wondering; "But Quantum, It's an FPS, you shape the character!1!1!" But no, if you need a good FPS to shape your character go look for a Telltale game or Far Cry 3. In Far Cry 1, Jack Carver shaped you. In Far Cry 2, the environment shaped you. In Far Cry 3, you shaped Jason Brody In Far Cry 4, you became Ajay Ghale In Far Cry Primal, You went back in time and experienced the beginning of their world. Over all, 9/10, good for modding, good for a hard time, good for an FPS adventure, good to complete your Far Cry collection.

Great action and made me laugh

The AI is fun to play against. Years ago when I first played I wasn't used to the AI actually reacting to my actions. I thought I was being all sneaky and I was going to get in the vehicle with the two enemies, eliminate them, and drive off. Instead while I was sneaking up on them I heard a vehicle drive up behind me but before I could do anything else I got run over. Somewhere a security team saw me and the AI decided it would be best instead of shooting me to drive really fast towards me. Another time I was hiding in the jungle listening to a conversation two guards were having. They started talking about how they were going to, "Fix his little red wagon..." when they find me. I busted up. And then I shot them.
