A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushed the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.
A unique sandbox FPS that allows you to complete your objectives in several different ways
Challenging A.I. that dynamically responds to your actions
Beautiful graphics, even by today’s standards, that can be upgraded even further by fan-made content
I remember the fuss there was about this game - but I never tried it: Until now! And I will say that it is great! There are some things I don't like about it such as the fixed save spots; yes this can be both very good so you don't forget to save during progress - but also you can't save in between save spots, making you fight all the way back in case you die (so please - don't die!).
It have a good storyline, plenty of action, and lots of tropical beauty!
I didn't play the GOG-version of this game, so I can't tell if you get the game patched at version 1.4 at instant. But I recommend to stay away from patch 1.4 and stick to 1.33.
In patch 1.4, the rocket launcher could be only fired when aiming with the scope. Prior that patch, you could fire the rocket launcher at instant, which helped me at some tense situations where other ammo was scare.
For the rest:
Its single player part with a very clear and strong plot and worked out well (even more and better than FPS games nowadays). The game does feel less repetitive due its different levels In contrast with the other Far Cry games where you need to drive through the same world and clear the same checkpoint over and over again. Do you miss the warm summer weather during winter? Play Far Cry.
I don't like the multiplayer that much. You could barely notice where other players are and where the player who guns you down is. The only thing is seeking for reflections emitted from held weapons, which does not help much when the sea is reflecting the sun as well. Also you'd be wise to choose the black shirt as color instead of the default red one, unless you want to act like a shooting target on purpose.
Fact that the game is still playable in 2019 without major regret shows its real quality. In 2004, it needed a really expensive station to get it going, nowadays it easily runs on a thin laptop.
Look past the graphics. The save points are fixed and usually not logically selected requiring you to do a lot over when you die.
It seems like no matter what difficulty I pick, the enemies always have perfect aim.
Playing the game is a chore and not fun as others have pointed out. If the save points were better or you could save wherever you want and the AI was worse on easier difficulties, it might be different.
Worth $3 on sale though, I guess.
AI is terrible and can see you from any distance. Also, be prepared to wonder where you're getting shot at as there is so much crap obstructing your view at all times. No manual save so you're at the mercy of checkpoints.
