Fantasy General: A Timeless Classic
I’ve been playing Fantasy General since its release in 1996, and it remains one of my all-time favorite strategy games. While I appreciate the spiritual successors, like Fantasy Wars (a fantastic game in its own right), I find myself returning to the original FG every time. There’s something about its gameplay, pacing, and charm that still feels unmatched. It’s a real shame that Fantasy General hasn’t been updated or converted to a modern engine 1:1. The original game has an undeniable magic that no amount of updates can replicate, and its depth and replayability stand the test of time. In an era where few games can hold your attention for decades (and most modern games are unimaginative slop), FG remains a shining example of design that lasts. I’ve played this game countless times over the years, and each playthrough is just as enjoyable as the last. It’s rare to find a game that holds up so well over 30 years, but this one does, without fail. Rating: 5/5** – A true classic, and an experience every strategy fan should try at least once.
