Join the Brotherhood of Steel, a technological revival group dedicated to restoring the world to its former prosperity through science and whatever means necessary. Take part in a quest to reawaken long-dormant technology in order to defeat a powerful enemy in the one of a kind Fallout Universe.
Each mission involves various hostile obstacles that must be overcome using tactical skirmish warfare. The player controls up to six detailed characters in the single player mission-based campaign or they may use their chosen squad online in multiplayer battles. Squad-members improve with experience, increasing their skills and earning perks. Many varieties of weapons, from handguns to rocket launchers, allow the player to lay waste to his enemies. In addition, the fighting isn't limited to pedestrians, as squad-members may take the action to the streets with armed vehicles.
As a Brotherhood of Steel initiate you will challenge hordes of ghouls, mutants and other radioactive nightmares. Always outgunned and outnumbered you will fight in hopes of restoring humanity. You're in the army now... so, welcome to the Wasteland!
You are the wretched refuse. You may be born from dirt, but we will forge you into steel. You will learn to bend, if not you will break. In these dark times, the Brotherhood - your Brotherhood – is all that stands between the rekindled flame of civilization and the howling, radiated Wasteland.
Your weapons will become more than your tools, they will become your friends. You will use your skills to inspire the lowly and protect the weak... whether they like it or not. Your squadmates will be more dear to you than your kin and for those who survive there will be honor, respect and the spoils of war.

The game is 15 missions long and it takes longer and longer for each consecutive mission starting from about 30 mins. Bear in mind switching between turn based and real time is a very big change in the game. I have completed the game turn based and it turned into a purely 100 % strategical game which I enjoyed many years ago. Now I am replaying the game in real time mode ( actually swithicng to turn based for extreme parts of missions) and the game is entirely different to play. Game takes maybe 100 hours to play in the setting you are comfortable in , tho for higher difficulty setting the game goes to 200/300 hours depending on the use of Tought guy mode. Not a very forgiving game , yet interesting because of the obsticles.
Side note: Has anybody completed the game on tough guy mode insane difficulty or ever heard of somebody doing it ? I am interested in people who might have completed the feat.
So in itself it is more like Commandos or some sort of X-com (if you have 10k years to beat the game turn based). More appropriate comparisons would be The Fall: Last Days of Gaia or Soldiers of anarchy. Theese games aree a lot more obscure but a lot more remeniscient of eachother, so if you played them here'se another one. You don't even need to know the lore and previous games - lore is a bit rewritten and moved a couple of thousand miles east. First time, do try to beat it on easy difficulty (and invest into plasma) - you'll become OP towards main enemies. After that - suffer as much as you like.
If you don't know a thing about this game then it begins with you being the most logical thing to emerge in a state of anarchy and decay - "Genghis-khan". You fight bandits, you unite tribes under your banners, make alliances and lead your squad of six creatures towards glory. Once you'll die everything falls apart. Later on and that might be a spoiler but this game becomes more adequate rendition of future war from Terminator (before it got ruined with lore extentions and skynet "development of plasma rifles"). You use future guns and future armour to fight some importaunt future war against future machines and all. It's fun!
The downside is a spike trap of difficulty like Gatling-minigun-robot on a roof or one-shoting supermutants on the hill, or invisible-one-step-away mines. Another reason to try "Easy" difficulty but it not always helps. Quite rare though. If you like fallout then run as all the hell. The game is fun in itself but in context of fallout lore its at the very least inappropriate. If you can cover "Fallout" and "of Steel" parts of the game with a duct tape for yourself and pretend that it has no relation to Fallout (it doesn't) you'll like that game.
The deal is also pretty good. For the price you'll get this game with some DLC content included, PDF manual and hi-res patch onboard.
The entire Fallout game series is great... Which every game up until Fallout 3 was a truly open world leaving you to do what you wanted, kill whoever you wanted and go where you wanted...
This game though was when the Childkiller "perk" wasn't included (Only the FO games before had it)..
But... This game though had two playstyles in one, where you can play it turn based using action points and maximizing the full benefits of the VATS system (Which starting out is a must for saving ammo).. And there is also real time mode, which a toon with high AP's move and acts faster in realtime than other NPCs/Players with fewer AP's..
The single player game and story was top notch, and multiplayer, oh my.. M-Lagger you aren't missed (Mplayer), but on those game servers you had so many PvP rooms with what "rules" were being used posted in game channel name.. The best ones (my favorite rooms) were the WW2 rules games..
The PvP this game supported though, is what really set it above and apart from all the other games back in its day..
Oh yeah, if you find and fix up das auto, don't leave your gear in it and walk off screen or fast travel.. Car will be there but will be empty of stored gear (learned this in my first play through long long ago)..
I would give this a 5 star if it were only a rating for the gameplay, fun factor, graphics/sound for the time, level design, etc. Unfortunately, there are so many bugs in the game that it can frustrate even the biggest fans of the series and tactics games.
Let's start with the good. The music and feels like a Fallout game. Sound effects and voice acting are good, though you miss out on the talking heads from the previous two games. The graphics and animation are a big improvement and the areas feels a lot more detailed. The level design is truly amazing. You have hostage situations, alarms enemies can pull, stealthed enemies, ambushes, sandbags you can duck behind, ladders you can use to climb a building and snipe... it's great! The combat has also greatly improved. You can choose AI for your characters on how they react (or don't), whether they stand, squat, or lay down, all of which have different benefits. Overall, if you like Fallout and like Tactics games, you'll LOVE this game... but there are many flaws - read on.
Now with the bad. You have the standard map to move from area A to B, and the random encounters are numerous and annoying. The difficulty is very unbalanced. Even on easy, your best characters can easily be wasted in 1 or 2 shots. The randomness of the combat damage is so ridiculous, that one lucky shot will end the game. Needless to say, this is one of those games where you will want to save every time you make a good move. Path finding is also bad.
Now the buggy. The game can start locking up. You'll noticed it when your keyboard fails to respond quickly. Best you can do is save, exit, restart. This happens for me every level or two. Mysterious things can happen like radiation, NPCs dying, etc. with no explanation. This can kill a mission. Enemies can also spawn in objects and be stuck. There's more, but that's a few.
I'm out of characters, so I'll wrap this up by saying great game, get it, but be aware of the bugs or you'll pull your hair out
