Fun, but know what you're getting into

Most of the negative reviews on here I agree with. This is easily the worst story and RPG Bethesda's ever put out. The fans (myself included) are right to be disappointed, especially as the first Fallout game I completed was Fallout: New Vegas. I'll start with the positives to get them out of the way - Fallout 4 has my favorite combat mechanics of any Bethesda game. Enemies actually take cover (gasp!) and throw grenades. Guns have some decent sound design and animations. In addition, I really like the crafting system they've implemented. And despite the jank, I really love the settlement building mechanic. Creating towns in a first-person, post-apocalyptic environment is one of the things I've done to relax after getting home from work. While I never liked Fallout 3's main story, Bethesda's previous entry at least had a handful of meaningful role-playing opportunities. Due to having a voiced protagonist in this game, Bethesda limited themselves to perhaps the worst Bioware-esque dialogue wheel I've ever seen. The player seemingly has four choices, but in most cases conversations railroad you into one, singular choice. Side missions, especially the radiant quests, are almost always bland and uninteresting. The "looter shooter" portion is only engaging if you're a weirdo like me, who actually enjoys using junk to build your ramshackle settlements. And despite how Todd Howard advertised it, the settlement building mechanic is required to progress through the main story. While it fails to do anything great in one category, these disparate elements - looting and shooting, settlement building, crafting, and roleplaying - all come together for an engaging experience. Just understanding what you're getting yourself into. This is not a true successor to New Vegas, or even 3. It feels as much of a spinoff as Fallout 76. Which is a shame - especially considering there won't be another mainline entry in a decade or so.

Average.

Even if we pretend the classic Fallout games don't exist for a moment and judge Fallout 4 entirely on its own merits. It is a painfully average first person shooter, something you think wouldn't be possible with I.D doing all the heavy lifting this time around, but sadly it is. The story doesn't matter, we get this directly from the lead writer himself, people are going to spend twenty hours building shacks and making "paper airplanes" out of his "great American novel," so why bother making an effort? If you are a classic Fallout fan there is nothing here for you. Don't even bother. The only thing this game offers besides shooting raiders and mutated animals is settlement building, which to be fair to Bethesda, is surprisingly addictive and what I spent most of my time on. That said, it's hard to ignore how it completely undermines both the main story, and even the previous one. You can build a water purifier out of aluminum cans and duck tape, for example, and despite this games world nuking itself over an energy crisis, you can leave a gas powered generator running indefinitely, so even when it came to the shack building the writer didn't care. I know the rallying cry is "but mods fix it!" and yes I did buy the game to try out mods. However, I'm not reviewing the modding community, I'm reviewing Fallout 4, and Fallout 4 is an average first person shooter. At best.

Finally DRM Free on GOG

I am so glad this game is finally on GOG where I actually own my copy of Fallout and can still keep my saves if something were to happen to a platform like steam. This is my favourite Fallout game which is most likely because I am a casual RPG enjoyer. This Fallout game is more of a shooter with decision-making and building as its focus and has less heavy RPG mechanics such as breakable weapons that the others are known for. If you are into those mechanics this game may feel a little casual for you but if you are looking for a good story, fun gunplay, and some decision making then you will enjoy this game

So, so angry...

I've many hours on this game. Many many hours. Many hours trying to make this game work without crashing! I've installed mods, patches, bugfixes, tried with so many things, config files and so on. And still game just crashes. In the middle of a fight, when opening doors, loading locations, talking, walking, standing. How can you immerse yourself and relax when you are always thinking that you can be shoved to desktop without any reason? This is the pinnacle of Bethesda laziness. I wanted to enjoy this game so much... The game world is rich but... repetitive. The quest structure is basically the same for every faction. Buy something else instead.

Well, congratulations to everyone on this day, without drm About the game, the game itself is good, there are nuances like the lack of RPG in the dialogues, the action has become much better, the world is bigger, as well as the sales of bethesda ^_^
