(New Vegas) "Hold my beer"

The good quests are too far in between, there is a lot of uninspiring filler here. There are a few "cities" but no worthy "factions", no arena and not many interesting things to do as a "bad" person. There are fewer npc's than the previous games (Oblivion, Morrowind). The map is smaller. The main questline is, also, kind of trash. It's a good warm-up to New Vegas though. Thank god I played that game during the pandemic and I felt the fun that can be had using the same engine and assets in a different way. Also, the world design of Obsidian: far better in their game. Fallout 3 can keep you awake in a pinch, and prepare you for the ultimate comparison when you get to play Obsidian's game.

2024 First Playthrough : "Meh."

I'm a big fan of Wasteland, Fallout, and Fallout 2. I also enjoy open world games. I just played Fallout 3 for the first time. While I didn't hate it I would recommend giving it a pass. The plot is largely a rehashing of plot points from the previous games. The world makes much less sense and has less internal logic than the previous entries, with lots of obvious inconsistencies and headscratchers. The switch to FPS means manually slogging over terrain at a pretty slow 'run' speed to get places instead of the ten second, overhead map travel of previous entries. It allows the player to sequence break, but doesn't adequately adjust for that - people, including the PC, just KNOW things they shouldn't because they would have if The One True Path had been followed. It's stunningly easy. The freely-acquired pet dog can singlehandedly wipe out a nest of ten foot tall deathclaws, the toughest enemies in the game. My sneaky-build character without weapons training handled all comers without breaking a sweat, using whatever weapons happened to be lying around, never bothering to sneak... and this is with me randomly wandering the corners of the map to unlock quicktravel locations so the quests, when I got around to them, would not take hours. The epilogue just mentions your overall karma rating and what happened in the last ~20 minutes of the game. Gone are the town-by-town postscripts, apparently. The later Fallouts have a requtation for bugginess, but plenty were on display here. Windows 11 shut down ~something~ spyware adjacent as soon as the launcher boots up. Characters walk into hovering midair positions. Random crashes every two hours or so. Some endless audio cycling. Exteriors are ugly and repetative, and interiors have a weird filter that grows to be headache inducing after a while. It's subpar for a major studio open world game, and it's subpar for an early Fallout game. It's not awful, but I'd recommend S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Arcanum instead.

Eh its okay

Ive never played a fallout game since part 4, but i had to give this game a try since everyone praises it. But there are some good and bad things about this game. The good the stories and side quests are cool. The bad, its not really open world, and the map directs you just towards a direction. It never really shows you exactly where to go....and if there's a mountain? You dont know if its up towards the mountain, under it, or around it. Its just hard to get around obstacles with crap and cars blocking your path. Forcing you to go around or go into subways to see if it takes you a way you want to go. That sucks the fun part for me. As it makes me feel as iam wasting my time...sad i couldnt enjoy this game. But hey if that doesnt bother you. Than you should like this game

A great game, for its time

Judging a game for what it isn't 11 years following its release is not only unfair, but shows more about the critic than the game itself, since if this was really that bad of a game as people keep claiming that it is, it would have been disappeared a long time ago and no one would even bother venting so badly against it so long after its release. Not to mention that this kind of behavior goes against GoG's seemingly "Review Guidelines", but hey - its the Internet, haters will be haters, while Bethesda remain at the top despite the high vocality of their critics. As for the game itself, this was a great one, a real novelty for its time. Its post apocalyptic atmosphere is still unmatched to this day by any other game in this setting, in my opinion. It had its share of flaws and faults which others went to such extra lengths to describe, but New Vegas, despite it seemingly better RPG elements, failed to capture this bleak, end-of-the-world feeling, the desperate fight for survival, and the tongue-in-cheek humor that 3 has. Indeed, its novelty wore off nowadays, and what used to be amazing back then is barely serviceable now, but if haven't done so, Fallout 3 remains highly worth experiencing at least once.
