Urban Exploring - The Game
Let's get one thing out of the way: The main quest sucks. Hey, it's a Bethesda game! Also, some gameplay mechanics don't work very good, but most can be modded. However, what makes this game special for me exploring the Wasteland and the ruins of Washington D. C. I enjoy exploring the game world much more in Fallout 3 than in any Elder Scrolls game, including Morrowind, which is one of my favorite games. In The Elder Scrolls, there are tons of dungeons littered around the countryside, which all have very similar themes and usually don't have a unique identity (with some exceptions, of course), but in Fallout 3, the "dungeons" are in fact "real" places like abandoned buildings and collapsed metro tunnels. They don't feel like video game levels (in contrast to the extremely linear and generic Skyrim dungeons), but they usually make sense in the context of the game world and you can imagine what they might have looked like a long time ago. And most of the time, there is something special to a location, something that makes you wonder what's happened there. Basically, it's Urban Exploring as a video game. Part of the fun is searching for valuable things between all the junk that's scattered everywhere, whereas in other games you mostly open chests and find useful items inside. In Fallout 3, you never know what you are going to find and where. Of course, if you like more straightforward level design and rewards, this may not be the game for you. But if you enjoy just exploring a vast world and value the experience itself over the possible result, I recommend you give it a try. I know no other game like it in this regard. The atmosphere is great, and with a few mods, the graphics hold up very well. I know this game gets a lot of hate, expecially from fans of the first two Fallout games (which I also like a lot), but apart from the main quest, it's really not as bad as many say.
