Potato Faces, Green Filter, Perfection

Fallout 3 may be a jolt for fans of the Interplay originals, with a new perspective, 3d engine, and developer, but past that is a grand experience in the Fallout universe. Today, the graphics and shooting mechanics are a bit dated (maybe a little more than dated) but if you were a fan of TES IV Oblivion, and wanted guns, here you go. The game contains beautifully crafted assets, from guns to teddy bears to ruined skyscrapers, and a killer ambient soundtrack. Quests can be hit or miss for quality, but most offer a bit of dark humor that is characteristic of the series, and the main plot may leave something to be desired, but the immersive world keeps you engrossed even if you decide not to quest at all. Exploration and discovery are big pieces of this game, and there is a lot to see, so subsequent playthroughs keep you finding new things. The DLCs are nice, and since they are included, you get the full experience. Point Lookout is a hill billy feverdream of nightmarish swamps and crazy cultists, 5/5. Mothership Zeta is a fun experience and takes the game to Earth's orbit + Squid Food, 3/5. The Pitt is gross, and it will kick your butt, 3/5. Operation Anchorage is a crazy arctic deathstorm full of campy acting (intentional) and simulated commie ass-kicking, 6/5 for freedom. The final DLC, Broken Steel, has ups and downs, and keeps you in the Capital Wasteland after the original main quest ends, more fun, more guns, more fighting, 4/5. Overall, the game is worthy of a run or two, and provides many hours of content even for those who stick strictly to quests, so go ahead and buy it.

micro-review

After a ten year break, the Fallout series comes back in 3D and with a changed combat system. You have the option of real-time combat, or you can use V.A.T.S. which "allows you to pause time in combat, target specific body parts on your target, and queue up attacks". It is not at all a bad game but it's less than it was expected from a "Fallout" title; it's a bit too plain, at least story/characters wise, and it's too heavy on the action side. Rating: You're S.P.E.C.I.A.L.! http://pixelloot.com/

Capitol Wasteland Wonder

When I had first played Fallout 3, I had not been a really amazing fan of the series to start. I had played, finished, and enjoyed Fallout and struggled with and never finished Fallout 2. Fallout 3 was the chance for a new developer to take the series in a new direction. That direction went from the classic D&D-style turn-based RPG to the Action RPG that we see today. What was lost in complexity of story and sheer dynamic of the world was replaced by a run and gun shooter with RPG elements. Whether you feel that change is in the best interests of the genre depends on how much you liked the old games. I can sympathize with the old guard fans who feel betrayed at the dumbing down of the series. The original Fallout universe was a multitude of shades of gray rather than the homogenous brown that attempts to feed in black and white choice into the game in the newer entries. The dialogue in Fallout games since 2 has been the thing of memes and one has to wonder how much more simplistic it can get. The lack of strategy needed to play the game has gone away in exchange for an inventory management simulator. But despite this, Fallout 3 is still incredibly fun. I still find myself tuning in to President Eden's speeches, I want to hear Three Dog's assessment of my story with his swagger attitude that he brings to the repetitious radio station he runs. While the combat is more reminiscent of a shooter than an RPG, it still is fun and no matter how many times you see it, an exploding slaver head is always satisfying. Sure there is little "choice" in the game's endings, but I still look at the story fondly and sometimes find myself wishing that Liam Neeson would be my father. The graphics are dated, but you can still enjoy an alternate Washington D.C. and still get lost in the world trudging through a post-apocalyptic action role-playing game.

Excellent Game

Fallout 3 from GOG runs perfectly smooth and stable running Windows 10. No GFWL as well. Really nice game. The graphics and gunplay isn't that great but exploring the vast, dark post apocalyptic world of Fallout 3 is fun. Definitely recommend this game for all.

It accually works.

I've had FO3 on Steam for along time. Big fan of the series in general. Somewhere betwwen windows 8 and 8.1 the game became unplayable with each update. Now on Windows 10 Steams FO3 get 1-3 mins before a crash. GOGs version does not use wondows live so your stability is much closer to FO NV. Meaning other than the Xbox version this is the only other stable version. Unlike the xbox the PC version runs at a civilized 60fps and mods, mods, mods. I am so glad I can enjoy looking for my father again.
