The bogey came out of nowhere. You see him just off your tail. The adrenalin hits you like a fist. You call your wingman: "Viper One, I've got a bandit on my six. This is not good..."
You go to afterburner and your Falcon jumps, slamming you back in the seat. The MiG 29 has just reached missile range... There! He's fired, the deadly rocket screams toward you, seeing nothing but the heat of your exhaust. Without thinking, you drop a series of flares hoping to confuse it, and yank back on the stick... 50 degrees... 80... over the top... your Head Up display shows you're pulling 9g's...
...Nearly blacked out, you ease forward on the stick. The g's drop, and you can see again. There he is! You're on HIS six now. This is going to be sweet. As you get tone you know he's yours.

From the very beginning the Falcon series has been acclaimed for its realism, pushing back the limits of what was thought possible for a comupter filght simulator back in the day.
It is as simple as that: the flight models are real, the terrain is real, the radar and weapons systems are real... And the threats are real. No phony weapons or magic bullets here... just the best civilian F-16 simulation available. You don't just play Falcon, you strap yourself in and get ready for battle.

  • Flight characteristics and armament of the real F-16
  • Advanced electronics/radar systems
  • The terrain conforming precisely to military maps of the areas

Still the best flight sim ever made

Falcon 4, including the essential free mod BMS, is still the pinnacle of flight sims. Astounding detail and a groundbreaking and untopped dynamic campaign means this game can be played for a lifetime. For the price you pay, Falcon 4+BMS is like highway robbery for how much you get. You'll be manually starting up the F-16, inputting information in your data cartridge, responding to fully modeled traffic control at one of a dozen airports, taking off, and getting into dogfights or bombing radar sites with an AI or real-life squadron, all within a mission you designed yourself that influences a fully simulated military campaign happening in real-time. BMS adds more planes, too. Want to fly an F/A-18c Hornet off the deck of a carrier? How about an AV-8B Harrier? You can do it. If you want the most realistic military flight experience, period, you should be getting this game. This is not for the faint of heart or those looking for a game like Ace Combat though: you need to learn every button and switch, every system and procedure. It's more fun than it sounds, trust me!

Finally!

Falcon 4.0 is for me without any doubt most awesome and fascinating concentration of bytes into CD-size piece of public software. There are many things which makes Falcon 4.0 very unique in comparison to another flight simulators: At first its physical model. At second overal deepness how it is developed and the fact it was developed with real pro Pete Bonanni. At fourth live-like radio in cockpit, i never felt so alive communication about battlefield in any other sim. At fifth really dynamique campaign where every successful attack has real effect on the current war progress. Do you want to stop weapons cargos to some enemy airfield? Then destroy their critical bridges which they are using to transport it, you'll see they will go out of ammo and fuel in some time. Do you want to control air? Then concentrate campaign to destroy SAM sites. Or you can leave missions to be dynamically preplanned and just flight them like ordinary pilot. And What more? You can install free addon - Falcon BMS to have cutting edge graphics even for today and simulator software which is so real, its used for our army pilots with custom cockpit hw - check Youtube videos for falcon BMS!

Some flaws keep this from greatness

In Falcon and Falcon A.T you get a single map with objectives to complete. Unfortunately the dos version of Falcon is far from the best version of the game, lacking both in visuals and audio. A.T is an attempt at a better PC version, but it still lags behind the amiga port. It is unfortunate that for both Falcon and Falcon AT there are no manuals besides a reference card that is not helpful. (note: due to issues of the launcher I use my own installation of dosbox to run F3.0)In Falcon 3.0 the situation is much improved with better sound and visuals. The multiple theaters of dynamic operation campaigns insure a multitude of hours of replayability. However you need to get through it's archaic visuals and clunky nature in order to get the most out of it. Though it is nowhere near as realistic as later sims, it is still complex, and a simple glace and the input reference card won't be enough. It includes the expansions with the Hornet and the MiG-29, but the manuals for these planes are missing, and though the basic controls are the same, both planes have fundamental differences in systems and a manual is a must. Falcon 4.0 is a legend. The flight simulator that put the "study" in study sim. Clickable cockpits, accurate MFDs, realistic flight model and a campaign so advanced it boggles the mind and with a community that modded it to hell and back, it truly manages to impress. Generally it held through time, but it did not came through unscathed. There are some stability issues here and there and the input bindings are all in one small window in a list without anyway to filter them. It makes key binding a pain. One other problem I noticed is that If you want to play the vanilla game, intro and cutscenes don't work for some users. Anyway, you will need a copy of Falcon 4.0 in order to install BMS. So, in most cases people buy this for falcon 4.0 in order to gain access to BMS. The price is fairly low for the whole pack and I still think it's worth it.

Get Falcon 3.0 for the superb game play.

I remember when Falcon 3.0 came out. It was a great sim--not necessarily the best looking but the game play was fantastic. Although I liked Falcon 4.0, I think 3.0 is the better game. 30 years have passed and I still remember some of the missions I flew that's how good it was/is. A buddy and I actually bought a second phone line so that we could fly missions together over our modems and communicate with each other via the phones on the 2nd lines. We played with the Thrustmaster HOTAs set up. It was expensive but worth it. The game has a quite a few different campaigns you can fly. The Kurile Islands was my favorite but it was very difficult. To win a campaign you have to assign flights and load outs for your F-16s as well as waypoints for you flights--don't be shy about adding flights to your mission, it helps. Once you take over the lead pilot in one of the flights, you take off and try to complete the mission. The enemies can be pretty difficult. Fly too low and you can get nailed by a shoulder-launched SAM. Fly too high and you'll get painted by the enemy radar and they will vector flights to shoot you down. After a number of missions, you will see the campaign/war front move based on your performance. Every mission is different and they all seem to matter. Missions are rarely easy. I flew a mission the other day and got back to my airfield and prepared to land and got jumped by a couple of MiG-17s. That sort of thing is what makes the game so much fun. It all just feels realistic. Sure the graphics are dated, but after you get past that it is a blast. The enemy AI is so superb it feels like you are playing against a human opponent. Because of this, the game never gets old. If you dig around on the Net you can find a fix for a couple of the too-deadly (unrealistic) SAM types. This is a great game that was far ahead of its time and is still fantastic today. Now, after 30 years, I'm still having fun playing it. You will too.
