Description
Evoland is a game and a story. The story of action adventure gaming as seen in many popular JRPGs and action RPGs, starting from the very beginning, when a few pixels were enough to make us dream for hours. You will discover a bit of video game history and very fun gameplay, covering 20 years of adventure gaming history.

Inspired by a wide variety of the most popular action RPGs and JRPGs, Evoland will take you from monochrome to full 3D graphics and from active time battles to real time boss fights, all with plenty of humor, and many references to legendary titles scattered along the game.

  • Play through the history of action-adventure video games.
  • Unlock many evolutions as you progress through the game, from old school 2D action/adventures to active time battles and full 3D action.
  • Have tons fun with the dungeons, puzzles, a heap of secrets to uncover, and dozens of achievements and stars to collect.

Decent...

This game is largely nostalgia fodder for the poor little kid inside of you that still cries out for video games as they once were. However, they are not, and this isn't either. It pays homage to some of the greats, and throws in a bunch of quirky humor, but not worth the $9.99 price tag. I picked it up during a sale and said why not? If it had been more pricy, I might have found out why not... However, it is what it is, play it, get a few short laughs, but if you are not a die hard Final Fantasy and Zelda fan, you might want to turn back now, lest ye fall prey to boredom and a lack of joke enjoyment.

Fun journey with some flaws

The game is packed with references that'll make your retro gamers heart smile and has a really nice soundtrack. The idea of evolving and alternating graphics and gameplay is really fun and mostly well executed, though it feels a bit shallow at times and some eras fall too short in my opinion. Overall the game is pretty short (about 10h for 100% completion) and rather easy, but the worst downside for me was the awkward collision detection in action-adventure mode. You can get used to it, but it just feels wrong and should've been executed way better, technically. All in all it's a short but fun journey. If you played and loved The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy (especially VII) and even Diablo, and are always up for a bit of nostalgia, then you might want to give Evoland a try. Don't expect a game with awesome combat and deep story that combines the best of (J)RPG history into one, but rather a game that takes you on a journey to remember some of the most awesome gaming experiences you've had in this genre, and you won't be disappointed.

Absolutely love this!

I've always been an adventurer searching for the best loot, until I found Evoland. Now I spend my time, searching for chests that enhance my game, whether it be graphical or audio. This really took me by suprise at how much I enjoy it! Also, save often, because it's not fun restarting.

GREAT GAME FOR KIDS

Evoland is a clever homage to the evolution of action-adventure/role-playing games. You'll feel right at home if you're familiar with The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy VII. It's a lighthearted, nostalgic trip that doesn't require firsthand knowledge to appreciate. + great game for younger children + very accessible and conveniently short and sweet + the evolution concept is novel and well done for what it is + excellent father/son time – the concept of evolving the game should have been developed further... half-way through, the evolution tapers down too much and you're left with just grinding and exploring – with such a simplistic storyline, exploration should have been rewarded more I'd recommend this game to anyone with children (5 stars). The game isn't difficult and the evolution effects were interesting conversation for both my son and myself. If you're looking at this game for yourself (3 stars), I'd wait until it's on sale.

Good game, funny jokes

This game is quite entertaining, but its main gameplay feature, the "unlocking" of new mechanics can sometimes be a little bit like Pixel Quest, which used in game money to purchase game mechanics (like DLC), or this PSP game called "Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman" One boss battle evolves throughout the game, and visually changes. I really like the idea that the combat changes, and have been enjoying the novelty of this game
