Deserves a sequel!

I love new and interesting action game IPs. I finished the game on hard and had a blast! Pros: - A traditional single player game - Fun story, characters, and setting - $50 (or less on sale) game that you actually get to own with no weird monitization - AWESOME combat mechanics - diverse weapons, perks, and upgrades, where you could reset your choices for free. It reminds me of doom eternal where you have many tools of destruction and you can have some cool synergy between them Issues: - Some arenas were too small for the number of crazy enemies spawned in, and I could get stuck in corners easily trying to dodge attacks - There was this bug that occurred maybe once every two levels where aiming down sights got stuck, meaning you couldn't stop aiming. This would happen in the middle of an intense boss fight and I'd die from it lol This could be a cool series, I'd love to see a sequel! I can definitely see ways it could go storytelling wise, and I have no doubt the developers could build awesome things on this foundation.

Entertaining and under rated

Very fun game that does a good job making you want to explore each level. Some of the level and monster designs are very cool. It's a linear game but they do a good job making want to explore every little bit of the level. And the story is very entertaining. The upgrades are spaced out enough to make you try new things rather than getting into a rut of the same combo.

Great Game!

Got my eyes on this game on release date, but I knew that sooner or later it will end up in GoG. I didn't hesitate to get it here when it was available. I finally just played and finished it, I have to admit that I had a blast. The more I was invested in that game play, not much for the cliché story, the more I loved it. Combat system, few challenging enemy and bosses. It's a must have. Didn't try the multiplayer yet, one of those days. I highly recommend it.

Clunky, confined and blinded

My first impression of the game was invisible walls, no jump button and insurmountable knee-high barriers. Not a good start. The levels are a collection of self-contained arenas separated by one-way passages, each of which subtly turns you to face the next one so it feels like all I'm doing most of the time is holding down W. Those one-way passages are especially bad given that there are collectibles to find. Each arena/room has several enemies which you need to kill before the door to the next one opens (or suddenly obtains a shiny interaction prompt). And although you have ranged weapons, trying to snipe a visible enemy in the next room from your current one is pointless. They've all got inexplicable magic forcefields which only deactivate when you move into their arena. Combat? It's some kind of third-person brawler-shooter thing. Ranged weapons have infinite ammo reserve, finite magazine size and mediocre damage, but it doesn't matter much because the arenas are pretty small. The problem is that your movement is really clunky. There's some auto-targetting on melee and ranged attacks, but that doesn't help the feel of the gameplay much. Maybe I've been spoiled by Warframe, but your character moves so slowly and your attacks have so little impact. All of that together makes combat feel so incredibly lacklustre. And the graphics? Everything is either blinded by glare (the first level, outside in the sunset) or it's too dark to see anything (second level, underground). And there's sparkling around random things indicative of temporal anti-aliasing - a terrible idea that should have never been invented - but you can't turn it off. Am I giving the game a fair shake? Probably not. I got to the first boss (the second level - underground, not in the first level - the train heist), died multiple times and just gave up because my character simply wasn't moving the way I wanted him to. Maybe I could have beaten it if I persisted, but I simply don't care to. It just doesn't capture my interest. I think the best description of this game is if the old Mega Drive classic Streets of Rage had a baby with some random corridor shooter and then dressed it up for Halloween. Unfortunately, that makes it sound better than it is. It's just mediocre.

A Cowboy Themed Character Action Game

Evil West is a game that feels like it comes from a different time. This is something that wouldn't have felt out of place if it had come out in the last years of the Original Xbox or early Xbox 360 era, and it's precisely that reason that it feels like such a breath of fresh air amid the bloated open worlds and crafting heavy design of today. It's a game that knows exactly what it's good at and doesn't try to reach for anything beyond that. The story is entertaining, but not spectacular. The exploration is heavily restrictive, but the locales look amazing. But what the game is about is the combat, and in that area it excels. The combat presents such a wide array of weapons and gear that every encounter has a myriad of ways to approach, and with everything at your disposal being based on cooldowns, instead of ammunition, you can bring out the heavy hitters in nearly every fight. You'll need to make use of your arsenal as well, the enemies are relentless, numerous, and often times will have multiple enemies your thought were bosses show up. It can get a little overwhelming, but the dynamics of how enemy behaviors work together can often force you to push the systems to their breaking point. If you are in the mood for an amazingly tight and thrilling character action game, and don't mind the restrictive levels, you will have a ton of fun with Evil West.
