Set compatibility mode to Windows 95
As another reviewer said to do. The game works perfectly on my windows 11 system, after doing this :)

Great fun until the bugs appear
As someone who only played Hearts of Iron III before this one when it comes to Paradox games, I have to say the game is a lot of fun. That is as long as it is working properly. The game mechanics are great and getting started with one of the smaller scenarios was blast. Halfway through the grand campain however, I managed to corrupt my safe game in such a way, that some of my armies which are besieging rebel occupied cities stopped gaining any siege progress. when ordering my forces to retreat from one of these cites, the game crashes. I can't say that I regret the time I spent with the game and I still plan on playing some of the smaller scenarios but be aware that there is a good chance that you wil encounter the same bugs when playing the grand campaign. On a side note, the game's soundtrack does not play under Windows 10. As it is just a single track, that repeats all the time, I wrote a batch file that starts playing the music, starts the game and closes the music player after each session. Be free to adjust it for your own usage: D: cd "D:\Programme\GOG\Europa Universalis" start europa.exe Timeout /t 0 REM time at 105 makes the music start after the intro if not skipped cd "D:\Programme\GOG\Europa Universalis\MUSIC" start Track02.ogg pause taskkill /IM vlc.exe /F

First 4X-game that I've played
I never was interested in 4X titles until few weeks ago and decided to give EU1 a chance. I'm really liking it a lot, especially when most mechanics become second nature and you dive deep into the economy/strategic stuff. For newcomers I'd advice to play the tutorial more than once and maybe skip the scenarios for some time. There's just too much information to take in that it becomes overwhelming although I can see that it may offer endless replay value (lots of nations and different victory conditions). Fantasia where it's at imo. Every faction starts with one city and then you start expanding. That way you get to understand the game's mechanics easier and it's incredible fun. The screenshots don't do this game justice as it's visually more appealing than you might think. Just charmimg stuff here. Seeing how the sequels apparently became more and more complex/in depth, EU1 is a great starting point for getting invested into 4X games as it's quite complex but approchable enough that you don't get demotivated and toss it away. I can see myself playing regularly a Fantasia scenario (different factions and victory conditions) for the years to come. Highly recommending this one.

Europa Universalis
It's a great value if you like older games that are new to you. As someone who doesn't play the most recent games of this genre, I think the game is plenty interesting/complicated/challenging. The only downside was figuring out how to get the older game to run on windows 11 and the fact that I have to turn the app off in task manager.
