Charming but almost unplayable

I love the Secret of Monkey Island games. They are my absolute favourite game series of all time. However I just can’t get over the controls in this game. You’ll spend most of your time running into things and get stuck in random places. The game is full of bugs and you can easily be forced to reload to an earlier save because Guybrush decides to get stuck and you’ll be unable to move. It’s frustrating. However, using a controller makes the game a bit more playable. I miss the point and click way of playing. With that said, the game is atmospheric, full of funny dialogue and lovable characters. It’s a solid Secret of Monkey Island, I just wish the controls were better.

Very good game, I recommend it!

It's a very very good game for it's period. It still stands one of the top adventure games and it can be compared with modern high graphics games. For me it's the second best game of Monkey Island series after the Curse and I definetly recommend it! I am happy that there are "news" for Monkey Island series after a long time even if these news refered to a site selling them. Excellent music, story, puzzles, characters and game logic! Have fun playing it!

Arrr!

A lot better than some people think or seem to remember. Sure, it's not the best of the series, but not bad either. Some of the puzzles are a bit harsh and the Monkey fighting system gets a bit annoying. The controls take some time to get used to and there are a couple of plotholes, that I'd rather not spoil. On the plus side, we see the return of some of our favorite characters, as well as the introduction of some new ones like I. Cheese, Pegnose Pete, Ozzy Mandrill and even that lovable rascal Charles L. Charles. The backgrounds are pre-rendered 3D images and they still look great, though I miss the gorgeous Curse of Monkey Island backgrounds. The character models are a bit boxy, but the game is from the same era as Grim Fandango, so it's understandable. The writing is pretty funny and the voicework is stellar, with Dominic Armato returning for the role. The music is pretty great, which is no surprise - this is Monkey Island after all. The game itself is a bit less serious, feeling more like a Disneyland tour than an actual pirate game, but if you are in the mood for a fun adventure, you'd get one. If you are a Monkey Island fan or an adventure game fan in general, you should try this game.

The worst in the series

I really wanted to give this game another shot but I just can't stand it: Really ugly graphics, even for the time, annoying controls, sub-par humour (especially compared to the earlier ones) and a narrative that just annoyed me. Even the puzzles feel off in so many ways. I can only recommend this if you are a hardcore fan. If not, skip this game and head straight to Tales of Monkey Island instead.

Good game

Maybe it's not good as the third episode, but imho it's still worth a try :) Yes the Monkey Kombat is terrible, but it's actually a small small part of the game, just grab some pen & paper.
