One of a kind.

When was the last time you played an RPG typing game? Never, that's when. Typing games get a bad rap because they feel implicitly educational, but typing words out in order to attack isn't much different from pressing one key or clicking my mouse. It has its own natural difficulty slider (giving you more challenging words to type quickly) and there's something amusing and weirdly satisfying about fighting monsters with the power of language. The elemental powers you get to enhance your attacks are perfectly balanced and all useful in different ways. I really liked the world I explored too; and the art style is striking, clever, and beautiful. I wish it had surprised me more with the rest of its gameplay though, and if it had, I'd also wish it was longer. It just relies on its gimmick a bit too much. As it stands, it's about 6 hours long and that feels right for what the game offers. The puzzle segments are very uninspired, and the story is a bit cliche. I had a lot of fun with it though, and it makes me hope we'll somehow get more games like it.

Charming unique game

tl;dr: Nice little game, annoying control scheme, short duration, get it on a discount. Epistory is a charming artistic endeavor disguised as a typing game. This game will not teach you typing or improve your typing much ... it will however let you enjoy controlling it completely with a keyboard (if you like that sort of thing) and make you feel like you have magic at your fingertips (which is always fun for a typist). The art style is somewhat unique and the world building itself, though reminiscent of bastion, is actually fun to watch. Gameplay is quite simplistic and a bit repetitive, but the devs have tried to vary the fun aspect adding some twists and turns (as much as possible in a typing game). The story is very introverted and introspective, so if you like that sort of thing you will enjoy it, otherwise don't expect much narrative. The audio needs to be balanced before you start (effects are too loud and narration is too low by default). The Arena adds some more playbility and the game can be hacked/customized to add additional vocabulary and content if one is so inclined. The game is easy; it's not hard to get to max points and getting all upgrades way before finishing the game. The game is also quite short but fulfilling for what it is. So what sucks about this game? the default control scheme that the devs chose F,E,J,I which is anything but intuitive. You can also use WASD but your fox will move diagonally which is quite annoying when navigating what is basically a rows/columns world. This was probably the most annoying thing in the game and I ended up using autohotkey to define an alternative movement scheme ijkl which is more logical but keeps your fingers on the home row. Also the devs seem slow to respond and not too interested in fixing things or adding features (both on steam and on their own forums). There are also some minor annoyances. Your fox will get suck quick a lot walking into obstacles in the world and there are several big areas that are basically empty. Might get a bit more life from this game if users start adding custom mods, dictionaries or additional content, but it's a game that you'll finish in a weekend.

Nice short game to master fast typing

I really liked this game, since in principle it is a learning game, but the mechanic of typing is utilized for everything here. This way, it is not perceived as dry learning, instead it just feels better to get higher sccores and keeps longer combos. I especially liked the way the world is being build up out of pages and the art style which fits to this nicely. Negative side might be the short length (6-10 h, depending on your typing abilities and your wish to challenge the highscore in the arenas).

Overall = 8/10

A fairy-tale like adventure where you have to type words to remove obstacles and defeat enemies. It’s a fun game to play with a good challenge as the difficulty adapts to your typing ability, but it does get very difficult and stressful when the enemies close in on you and you can’t find the right keys! The origami artistic style is nice, but I felt it could have looked even better. The story isn’t anything special, but the narrator and music make it a charming experience. Gameplay is very limited, but the puzzles were a nice addition.

Poor Design But Good Story and Core

Epistory had a great start and had me loving it’s game play; it’s story; and it’s visual style. By the end though it managed to fizzle out in various ways but still was a good game. The game play is surprisingly engaging. The voice acting was very well done and the story starts off as the telling of a girl’s tale and you learning more about their life as they remember more and more. The game handles exploration well and you need to not only find reveal points to be able to see more of the map but have enough XP to unlock them. You also gain points to use to unlock skills to help tailor the game to your liking. That being said I never fell short and there are always enough ways to gain XP a;lthough later on I maxed out all of my skills with over an hour left in the game. The difficulty curve was a big issue. I started off on the “insane” difficulty and for about the next five hours the game was what I would call challenging but fair. I died a bit but I always felt like I could tweak my strategy of what powers to use; which enemies I target first; etc. During and after the mining level however the nests I encountered forced me to reduce the difficulty bit by bit until by the end I was at the “easiest” difficulty level. Not only that but I was having a tough time advancing even on that lowest level. There were no more skills I could upgrade and strategies can only be tweaked so much. The puzzles you have to solve were fun and interesting to a point although a tad over done for some. For instance figuring out how to make three windmills spin at once was a good puzzle the first time but mundane by the fourth or fifth time. One thing I will also mention is that I found the game sometimes didn’t do a good job figuring out which word I was starting to spell if multiple enemies on screen had a similar word and it would act as if I wasn’t spelling it correctly because I was trying to target another enemy. The game ends with little explanation or wrapping up of the plot.
