The New Mechanics: -Pirate Diplomacy: Extremely useful. Makes pirates a bit more than an obsticale to expansion. One can pay them off and ignore them, use influence to weaken their fleet spawn, buy out pirate marks to have the pirates attack certain systems, or just ignore this feature and attack the pirates. -The ability to 'disguise' mercanary fleets as pirates. Every faction has the option of gaining this ability via tech, but Vaulters get it from the start AND can disguise their own ships (not just ones bought on the market) The new faction, Vaulters: A science focused faction with emphasis on quality of systems over quantity of systems. The key difference is the Argosy, a unique colonization/explorer ship thats super fast and can fully colonize a planet instantly. But in exchange, Vaulters have a 'cooldown' between colonizations meaning they cannot mass systems like Cravers or Horatio can. The Vaulters also have a 'portal' improvement that allows them and their allies to teleport between Vaulter systems. Extremely useful when your empire is scattered about the map. The main problem with the Vaulters is that Argosy-colonization is extremely addictive and once used, other factions colonization seem slow... In short, this is the only expansion I would recommend for new players. Pirate Diplomacy is extrenely welcome and Vaulters are one of the easier factions to learn and play. Arguabaly the most 'essential' expansion of the bunch, but the base game is still complete on its own.
