Description
Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship or to a massive fleet of warships or freighters. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, or plundering and capturing enemy ships. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy and blasting pirates.

The main story line takes about 8-16 hours to play through. The galaxy contains hundreds of star systems and planets, and several alien species with their own unique technologies. You can choose between more than fifty ships and several hundred ship upgrades. A plugin system allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, or missions, and the galaxy editor can be used to add new star systems and planets.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Over time, the game universe will expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, and artwork.

hidden gem

This is a very entertaining game about a space travelling ships / fleet. Solid 2D tactical space combat with nice graphics. Very nice story campaign with numerous side missions -> story wise a nice universe. It is possible to start without fighting, however later on you will and for endgame you need to fight. The full story is not possible without fighting. But you can prepare via trade or missions or even fighting. However the story is a bit illogical (the further you go away from the starting empire, the stronger the enemies are). So you get stronger ships from the other empires only, and some necessary equipment for the endgame. I just don't understand why this game is free of charge, while other, worse games need to be paid for.

It's free.

Remember Flash Trek? It's basically that. Absurd grind, long missions, unbalanced play and a terrible autopilot. I gave up before I got the ship I wanted. The quest chaining is really bad. Still, the heart of a decent game is in there. Worth a try for anyone interested in the combination of flight/space combat/management/light RPG.

Beware Modding + Upgrades

Gameplay is nice, but control of your escorts (ships that you own, but not your flagship) is crude. Outfitter menu is a disaster: installed / storage / cargo. Needs a total redesign. 10.12 -> 10.14 Updated game erases plug-in directory. This directory is not part of the installation. It is manually created by modders (ie you), and by all rights should not be deleted during an update: but it *will* be deleted. I tried posting this issue, but the developer (being incredibly short sighted) hosts the game on github (owned by microsoft) which uses broken captchas. If I have to jump through hoops to post a bug report, -1 star.

Easy mechanics, engaging story

Simple 2D top-down gameplay and easy-to understand mechanics. ES's story and community makes it stand out from similar titles - it's easy to mod (even for the technically inept like me) and freely available plugins expand the existing story.

They need to include a recursive main quest relaoding mechanism but aside from that it's a fundamentally fun game to play.
