Ambitious attempt, but lacking
I'm glad I got this game for free. I'd be pretty frustrated if I'd paid for it. There's a lot to like about the game, and I enjoy the setting and art design. The core of gameplay is fun, but frankly I just think the difficulty is overtuned. Yes, you can turn on invincibility, but I'd like more gradations of difficulty (e.g., bigger health bar, longer dodge/parry windows, fewer enemies per encounter, whatever). Maybe I'm just too old for games like this anymore, and the reflexes requried I simply don't have. But there were other aspects of the game where it felt like I was often fighting the camera, the auto-lock-on system, and to some extent the movement as well. The typical tip is "use the environment, but that's easier said than done when you're being swarmed by 10 different enemies, and the camera has decided that the kick that should have delivered an enemy into a weapon rack instead will go off to the side towards a table. I think underneath it all, there's a really great game struggling to get out, but the game's own design seemed to get in the way for me. Maybe I'll finish it in invincible mode, but as it stands, I'm not sure I'll bother. But at least I didn't pay for it.
