Ambitious attempt, but lacking

I'm glad I got this game for free. I'd be pretty frustrated if I'd paid for it. There's a lot to like about the game, and I enjoy the setting and art design. The core of gameplay is fun, but frankly I just think the difficulty is overtuned. Yes, you can turn on invincibility, but I'd like more gradations of difficulty (e.g., bigger health bar, longer dodge/parry windows, fewer enemies per encounter, whatever). Maybe I'm just too old for games like this anymore, and the reflexes requried I simply don't have. But there were other aspects of the game where it felt like I was often fighting the camera, the auto-lock-on system, and to some extent the movement as well. The typical tip is "use the environment, but that's easier said than done when you're being swarmed by 10 different enemies, and the camera has decided that the kick that should have delivered an enemy into a weapon rack instead will go off to the side towards a table. I think underneath it all, there's a really great game struggling to get out, but the game's own design seemed to get in the way for me. Maybe I'll finish it in invincible mode, but as it stands, I'm not sure I'll bother. But at least I didn't pay for it.

Ignore the 1-stars

If you look, none of them have the "verified owner" tag. All the people who actually bought and played the game have given it much higher ratings. If neckbeards can baselessly bash something they've never tried, then I can baselessly laud it. Errol Flynn / Zorro simulator is a game I can't believe hasn't been made before.

Amazing, but really requires interrupt

This game is amazing, on so many levels and I dearly wish I could give it 5 stard. However, the combat is really fast compared to most games and I find myself often using the wrong action between parry and dodge and pressibg the right button right after. Unfortunately, since this game doesn't interupt the parry action when i press dodge, a lot of encounters turn out much more difficult than necessary. If interrupt is added to the game, it's a 5 star for me.

The game defeats its own purpose

So on one hand the devs wanted to make a swashbuckler game where you move around a lot and use the environment against your enemies But then they made it play like Arkham Asylum, so both the player and enemies will automatically lunge towards their target regardless of range. So you try to run around these arenas to use all of the traps or props lying around, and you'll get hit by an enemy lunging 10 feet at you in a split second. So instead of fluidly moving around these arenas, you instead spend a lot of time waiting for your cue to use your parry or invulnerable dodge. It doesn't feel good to play.

Antithesis to Chaining

While I like the art style and find the dialogue amusing, the combat is the main focus and it's broken. Eurogamer wrote "Arkham-esque combat" and it's anything but that. It's fundamentally broken because of how certain enemies are scripted to be immune to certain attacks without meeting pre-requisites. That's fine when it's a qualifier for my attacks, but that scripting should stop when you use an object on someone and it clearly shows them lying flat on the floor with stars around them. For example, I hit an armored guard with something that lays them flat and then try attacking but they immediately recover and block it skipping the animation for standing. Another, I double-dodge a duelist which allows me to kick them but they don't hit a wall so I immediately kick them again into a wall. Normally, hitting a wall allows you to get in a full combo attack until a life bar disappears but because kicking twice takes too long, they immediately block after my first hit. Finally, removing one of an enemy's life bar (if they have more than one) automatically ends a combo chain. This is unnecessary, there are so many enemies that you'll have to end the combo yourself to parry/dodge or the other enemy hitting you will end it. All of these examples destroy the flow of combat and make you wish you were playing Batman.
