And then decide if this is your kind of game. In my opinion, this game is horrible as a game. Visually it is excellent, but it sucks as a game.
The developers could have simply taken the real life challenges of a real ant colony and portrayed them accurately.
Instead they made a mediocre ant-colony themed RTS.
Such a wasted opportunity...
I had this game for a while on my wishlist. It is no longer on my wishlist.
This is not an ant colony sim so don't expect to do anything with the actual queen's ant nest. It's a linear based story with very tedious repetive boring missions. Hopping across a flooded zone isn't fun, finding aphids in a dark map isn't fun, catching fire flies isn't fun, scouting out dark maps for enemy positions isn't fun, and the battles are very repetitive and boring. They even reuse the same maps a lot. I had high hopes for this game where I was imagining "empires of the undergrowth" but better graphics but this aint it. Not even close. "Empires of the undergrowth" is a far better game. This game also stripped features from the original empire of the ants game so don't expect a good sequel. I'm forcing myself to play this until I beat it because that's how boring it is. I got it as a gift for my birthday from a relative but now I regret asking for this. I gave into the hype when I should have waited to see reviews or real gameplay. I don't recommend this game to anyone if you wanted an ant colony sim. As for a strategy game it's barebones there is really no base building its the same generic copy pasted crap all over again. The unit variation sucks for the ant battles, the god powers make no sense for buffing, and I'd imagine the multiplayper aspect is very short lived where if you lose a battle it's already over. Who ever rushes tier 2 units first can easily win with the over powered beetles or who ever rushes the god powers first can win with op buffs on their units. Very poor game design. Whats even more sad is your ants get ZERO food from kililng insects.
The only positive is the graphics/beauty in the game world but the game itself is lifeless, bare bones, and boring.

I really wanted to give a better score for this game but I simply cannot.
Let's start with what I liked first: ▲▲▲
- beautiful graphics, simply stunning to look at
- some really fun battles, especially with units that you don't get to see often like hornets, mantis and
snails
- powers system is decent and helpful in battles
Now on to what I didn't like and there is much more of it: ▼▼▼
- exploration missions are such a mindless grind that it amazes me how this idea got to production. you get almost no visual cues like where to go so you are left wandering often dark uninteresting underground maps like a madman hoping to just get it over with. I understand developers wanted to "force" exploration here, but that is not how you do it. My recommendation to developers is to REWORK this in a patch it is so bad
- overall game is built for consoles, you can see it from UI , no PC game plays like that
- strategic and tactical missions, while sometimes fun and interesting, most of the time fall short and resort to resource grind until you have enough force to blast through enemies
In summary, the game has it's moments but more often than not falls short in execution. Maybe get it if it's on a steeper discount, otherwise I cannot recommend at full price in this state. I am hoping developers get the feedback and try to improve some concepts in an expansion or something.
Beautiful game. But nest update is frustatingly badly explained...and in some missions, it will mean you are doomed. Caterpillar are just too strong to beat and you will die very often trying to update your nest the best way possible... When you have many units and kind of units, it is fun to place them so your acid shooters are behind your warriors and workers. Overall still a good game. There is varied missions from finding missing ants, to hunting firefly, to spy on enemy behind enemy lines, etc... The way your 'main ant' move is impressive and you will feel like your ant is really moving realistically, that is, you will turn around a leaf as you see in real, over and under... pretty impressive control. 82% joy and contemplation, 70% for combat (updating nest is frustrating...) , 98% quality of scenery (unreal engine...), 87% control of the game. I still miss 'Les Fourmis' original gameplay though...
