Control the destiny of a fledgling civilization through as many as 500,000 years of human history. From meagre beginnings you must exploit the natural resources around you to build an empire capable of dominating the Earth. But your rise to supremacy will not go unchallenged. As was the case throughout history, rival civilizations are certain to oppose you every step of the way.

New technologies, buildings and weapons become available as your civilization progresses through history. But bear in mind that advancement does not necessarily mean success. Your civilization might flourish during one Epoch only to be crushed in the next...

The AI is too terrible

So the concept of the game is okay and I would rate it probably at 3 stars if the AI were better. The problem is it has no idea what its doing so it cheats and just gets a bunch of free resources all the time. That might work in some games but in this style of game it means that there is no point in controlling areas or attacking resources or doing anything else strategic. The only thing you can do is attack the AI's military buildings in a club match until one of you dies. Of course you can generate a custom map and disable AI cheating so there is a point in attacking workers and such but then the AI is so hopeless that even filling the map with them all ganged up against you is of no challenge. This might be acceptable if it were one of the first RTS games made but this came out years after starcraft and the starcraft AI is vastly superior. Empire Earth is just bad because of the poor AI.

Excellent Game

I never much got taken up by Age of Empires--it never really clicked with me (not that I don't enjoy playing it, only that there are other RTSs I prefer to it). I had only heard of this game but never really thought to try it out, as I figured it was just a rip-off of AoE. However, my brother bought it and shared i with me. It was tremendously fun. I would definitely recommend it to fans of the RTS genre, at least for a try. Some people prefer AoE, but I place this one above it. It's hard for me to state the reasons why... Perhaps it's because there are more ages--perhaps because it runs fine on my computer and I haven't had any multiplayer issues--or maybe I just like the fact that one can build up a Napoleon-era army and have awesome battles between muskets and cannons. At any rate, I would heartily recommend at least giving this game a shot.

Ultimate timesink for an RTS lover

I've played many RTS games back in the day. This is the one I still play often. on the surface of it, this game is just an Age of Empires clone turned up to 11: gather 5 different resources (food, wood, gold, iron, stone), build your production buildings, build units, wipe out enemy, rinse, repeat. Advance through epochs to get better weapons and technology, while leaving obsolete tech behind. Seems pretty straightforward, right? There is one HUGE thing to set this game apart--the scenario/campaign editor. It is one of the most flexible modding tools ever designed for a computer game. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands custom campaigns, and scenarios, many of them better than the ones that come with the game itself. This game still has an active modding community to this day, and new content's being made for it. There are cons, of course: the graphics are several gens behind what you'd expect, as are the animations and units have pretty bad pathfiniding, requiring additional babysitting when compared to what a modern RTS player may be used to. But the incredible amount of content the game can provide you with makes all of these petty concerns irrelevant. If you want to see how far RTS games can be pushed by normal users, who aren't full-time designers, get this game. ANd look into the user-generated content for it. If you have even a smattering of an interest in history, you will not regret it.

I have a credit on this :)

I play tested this game for 3 years of development. my opinion is a little bias to say the least. Huge number of units pretty well balanced considering the number of epochs. one of the first RTS games to make the leap to a 3d engine.
