ELEX II is the sequel to ELEX, the vintage open-world role-playing experience from the award-winning creators of the Gothic and Risen series, Piranha Bytes. ELEX II returns to the post-apocalyptic Science Fantasy world of Magalan – with massive environments that can be explored with unrivaled freedom via jetpack, you will be able to move through the epic story any way you want.
Several years after Jax defeated the Hybrid, a new threat arrives from the sky, unleashing the dangerous powers of dark Elex and endangering all life on the planet. In order to defend the peace on Magalan and the safety of his own family, Jax has to go on a mission to convince the factions to unite against the invaders and find his own son, Dex, who got separated from him …
Dive into a huge, hand-crafted, completely unique world with multiple factions and diverse environments set in a post-apocalyptic science fantasy universe.
The game allows you to:
explore the planet of Magalan with unprecedented freedom, using your trusted jetpack to traverse the map and even fly!
interact with a lived-in world, full of unique NPCs, who
will remember what you’ve done and react accordingly
will join or leave your group depending on how you behave
are able to be killed, which will have an effect on the story
engage in fluid close and ranged combat with a massively improved control system
experience a story where your actions have consequences, immersing you in a world of moral decisions
pros
+ combat feels smoother than elex 1
+ 3 main fractions and 2 sub fractions with nested quest lines
+ way better attribute and skill progression than elex 1
+ huge world that is fun to explore
+ piranha bytes formula
cons
- lighting sometimes does terrible things to the character models, especially their eyes can get creepy
- graphic bugs (textures sometimes disappear; but I'm playing on linux with wine - so maybe thats the cause of that)
Good thing that it”s not another attempt to do Gothic. It is a good follow up for first Elex.
Fighting system is not so annoying as in Elex but could be little bit interesting. Keep looking for good formula.
Plot is good in general but bad in details with wholes and unlogical things.
Beautiful world interesting to be explored for the first time but totaly boring starting from chapter 2.
I liked the first Elex and was excited for the sequel. But within a few minutes of play it was clear that the controls are unresponsive and confusing. Animations and combat are slapped together with no real thought or effort. The whole thing is terribly disappointing.
Standard PB game during chapter 1. After that - downhill. Kill X enemies quests, where X is in tens. Forced myself to play through chapters 2,3. Couldn't do this anymore on chapter 4. Uninstall
Good stuff first. One of it's best qualities is the sense of exploration and adventure. The world invites you to explore. Once you set off on your journey through Magalan, you will almost allways have something new and interesting on your horizon to check out. The jetpack adds another layer to exploration and is very much appreciated. If you like open world games and exploring, you should dig what Elex 2 has to offer.
The main story is OK. Where the meat of the game (story-wise) for me lies in ppl's stories in the world. Their inter-personal relationships, their past decisions, conflicts between factions and so on. Since I also played Elex 1, it was interesting to see how the world changed between the two games.
I also like the presentation fo the game. The game can look quite pretty at times. The lighting system in particular, mixed with fog and some god rays, can make the scenery look quite striking. Voice acting is done well, making most characters believable. The music, well, it's there. I didn't feel the need to mute it so there's that I suppose.
Now for the bad stuff. This game feels very dated. The best comparison I can make is Fallout 4. I said earlier the game CAN look pretty but only from a distance and in specific situations - when there's strong source of light in the scene. Otherwise, the game looks like it's 10+yr old. Same goes for character and facial animations or controls. It all looks and feels janky.
The biggest flaw of the game is performance. I can go from 110+ fps in Ignadon to barely 60 in the Fort, what the hell ? It was even worse with the DX11 executable... Dips like that are very noticeable and distracting. I also had a problem where the game would just hang after the first two intro movies. The only way I could make it work is deleting Elex 2 folder from AppData/Local. It was quite annoying.
If you are willing to put up with the game's jank, performance issues and other issues, it does offer a captivating experience. You decide :)
