Infuriating, unbalanced mess

Elex really is just Gothic with better graphics. Gothic had its charm back in 2001 and players put up with the clunky combat and buggy, unbalanced mechanics and gameplay because we didnt know any better. But there is no excuse for this broken mess in 2017/18. The combat is worse than Witcher2 on release day, every single enemy will kill you with a few attacks or directly oneshot you. The animations are so bad, you cant predict movements, you cannot reliably evade, parry or attack. The shooting and magic is still on a level of quality you would find in steam asset-flip games. Like every Piranhabytes game you have to spend HOURS upon HOURS stealing and pickpocketing everything you can while evading oneshotting enemies until you have enough money to buy fighting capabilities. And then still with lvl20+ and badass weaponry that you spent 30h to get, your ass gets handed to you by random enemy groups because good gear doesnt fix your broken fighting and enemy AI. This is not good nostalgia, just 16 year old mechanics and animations packaged in a nice wrapping. At the very least, watch some gameplay videos before you decide to buy.

No optimization, laggy, ugly, unplayable

I can play any new title without a problem, but this game cannot properly move unless I play it on low quality settings. Even then the lags are present. I am far from impressed by its graphic quality, the animations are ugly, the voice is meh and the gameplay, nothing original. For the fans of Gothic this may be something to celebrate. For me not so much. Starting with the graphics that look quite ugly, this game tries to do something but fails. The locations are small, no open world or anything of the kind. Even on larger maps, the feeling of "I must go behind that tree, there will be something there" and yes, it will be something there, because the map is too damn small, so they placed things everywhere. The graphics are ugly. The characters have a better quality than the environment, but that is all. It has huge problems with lags and fps drops. The cut scenes are atrocious. The effects are worst that Unity's free ones. The animation is mediocre at best. The story? Unoriginal as hell. One planet, one comet, one "exotic mineral"... is this Tiberium? It sure looks like! They tried, they failed. The rest is mediocre, a mashup of Mass Effect and Fallout. Is this a good RPG? Maybe, if you consider KOTOR and Gothic 2 to be your game of reference. I am past that era. If you demand something better, sorry, but you will get nothing new. The interface is lacking, everything is done as fast as possible and it is visible. One big screen with tabs, just like a crappy 2d indie Zelda clone. The sound, it exist. And that is that. Does this game deserves 2/5? I have to admit that I was very curious, and had high hopes. The hype was real, and it seemed legit. But the disappointment was also real. Maybe, after they will patch the hell out of it, my rating will go higher, but for now, this is it. The devs must stop rushing half finished games and pretend that we are blind by hype. Yes, most of the time it works, but not always. This time it was too much for me.

Hope

I wish i could write this Review on Steam to adress some "special" Users. If you think BF3 is the best Flightsim there is, GO AWAY and DONT LOOK BACK! If you liked Gothic 2, you feel at home. No artificial "every Monster is the same Level as you" Crap like in Skyrim etc. UI and Graphics are pretty outdated, if there wasnt Shadows and Lightning, it could be a Game from 2007. Thats what im really shocked about. But the first Impression is a fluid Open World. I played Gothic 2 at least 4 times, never finished Gothic 3. Wonder where Elex will rank. Spend my Lunchmoney for the next 2 Weeks to support Piranha Bytes. Hope it pays back.

Possibly even better than Gothic

Piranha Bytes have always been known for how dense their worlds are, much less for their size. They are known for the replayability and possibility for choice, much less for the actual quality of the main plot. Yet ELEX delivers both rich lore, amazing story and huge world, without losing whatever Gothic and Risen were always good at. The game is not perfect, yet its flaws can easily be neglected. Certainly, animations could be more polished, and there are some minor bugs (most of which are already patched), also melee combat doesn't feel very comfortable. However, the design of the world that uses 3d dimension in the best possible way, and is made so that your jetpack adds to the exploration instead of taking from it, is just amazing. The factions design is incredible, not only in terms of variety, but in delivering the feeling the feeling that your choice is never the greater good, but mostly the lesser evil. The alignment system that actually matters a lot is a rare thing as well. All in all, the game does deliver what previous games of the studio managed to deliver while also succeeding where those games failed. And it does make you feel awesome.

Not Worth it

Frustrating, and unpolished. Its just one annoying mess - make one wrong move...dead. Most of the time its even due to a bug. There isn't any fun to be had here.
