ELEX is a handcrafted action role-playing experience from the award-winning creators of the Gothic series, set in a brand new post-apocalyptic Science Fantasy universe that puts players into a huge seamless game world full of original characters, mutated creatures, deep moral choices and powerful action.
In ELEX, you join the war over a powerful resource that gives people great magic-like powers but turns them into indifferent cold creatures. You decide if emotions and humaneness or cold synthetic logic will rule the world of Magalan.
Completely seamless Open World experience without borders and loading zones for the ultimate exploration experience
Vertical Exploration: Use the jetpack to reach any place in the game world
Simulated game world where everything reacts to the players actions and provides for an authentic atmosphere
Highly interconnected quest system that support true player choices
Tactical and challenging combat system for close and ranged combat
Universe set in a post apocalyptic science fantasy universe that combines the most interesting aspects of all genres
Really enjoyed this and not as hard as people say. Standard rules for Risen, etc - don't think you are invulnerable and can kick butt from the start. Begin slow and build up - loved the mix of magic, tech and weapons!
-This review is written while I still haven't finished the game-
First of all, I'm a huge fan of Gothic 1 and 2 and count them among my favorite games of all time. That's why I was hyped when I learned about this game and heard it has a gothicesque feeling to it.
And true enough, it feels a lot og Gothic.
Elex takes a lot of it's design from it's predecessors and puts it's own touch to it while giving a nod to the originals here and there. So why am I giving only three stars?
World
The world is huge and a nice new take on a post-apocalyptic setting. You have different climate zones and vegetation and the world is filled with a lot of ruined builings, people and monsters. Maybe a litte too much of the latter since sometimes it feels like you can't take three steps without running into monsters.
Weapons
As the game promises there are a lot of weapons in the game ranging from melee weapons like swords and axes to ranged weapons like guns and rifles and even heavy weaponry like flame throwers and rocket launchers.
Difficulty
As other reviews already stated whis game is tough. You will probably die a lot. This fact wouldn't be so bad if the game was difficult because it was designed to be difficult. However the game is difficult because it wasn't designed to be difficult - and there lies the problem. The difficulty of the enemies has a huge range - which doesn't correspond with the xp you get from them. Sometimes I have a lot more problems dealing with low xp enemies than with high xp ones. Most problems arise from the fact that your character attacks really slow while enemies attack in rapid succession. Yes you can dodge - but that shouldn't be necessary in every fight. It takes a lot of time until you can level up enugh to use semi decent weaponry and even then it's not easy.
UI
Why did companies start to think that an UI consisting of different shades of blue is good?
I still like the game and with a little bit of more polishing it can become really great
My review will be like this. Before this game I completed RDR2 2 by 97 percent, explored almost everything that was in the game, and in RDR online I got level 50 and the maximum level of the merchant role, in total having spent 415 hours in the game, so, this is objectively a good game with deep characters, a good atmosphere of the wild west, nature, and a complex history and plot, but what am I getting at? Having started playing Elex, I was more delighted than with RDR2, I had not played Gothic (Oblivion forever) before, but maybe due to the fact that Elex intertwined three of my favorite genres (Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Post-Apocalypse), maybe due to the fact that this is the a classic game and RPG (Probably both) so ... I liked Elex more than RDR2. Here is my conclusion. It's a good game with an interesting universe, normal characters (as in Red Dead Redemption) interesting side quests, and a pretty interesting plot.
First of all let me just say that I agree with the great reviews given for this game on this site and I think it's the closest thing together with Risen 1 for me that came close to evoking the feelings of Gothic 1 and 2. That being said, a lot of elments don't work for me and the most important one is the sense of progression and exploration. Let me just add for context that I loved the way you would rise from humble beginins to an avatar in the previous games and it wasn't just through story but you could also see it in every aspect and especially combat but here I feel like I'm stuck in limbo. I haven't joined any faction yet because of a completionist mindset and wanted get all the xp from every faction quest before joining one and combat does get easier once you ingest elex potions and add a point into the group skill but... I just can't get any exploration done the way I want. Even for quests that are beginig quests for factions you pass places you would like to explore and can't because of the mobs, I get it it should be hard, some should be explored later on but damn it feels like a grind, almost all places are full of hard to fight mobs. Previous games had enemies placed throughout the world so as to stop you from going to places where you had no place being instead of adding an invisible wall, here it's the same with the added fact that every area has easy and hard monsters intertwined which I presume is because of the vertical exploration offered by the jetpack and the chance to avoid such encounters but it seems like all you do is avoid encounters. Haaaa, I think I've said enough, a low rating for me based on very subjective issues. I had hoped I would relive G1 and 2 but it didn't work for me. PS: One on one combat great, multiple mobs horrible. Soundtrack - nothing memorable, worst one out of all their games.
This game is very interesting it's a open world light RPG. You don't need to follow the main quest and you can just screw around and do whatever. As of right now I have about 10 hours in and decied to restart over as I learned things and not care for my choices. The graphics are a bit aged and could use a small tweak or even a HD texture pack but overall I am having fun just exploring the world.
