Description
ECHO is a Third-Person Science Fiction Adventure.

After a century in stasis the girl En arrives at her destination: A Palace out of legend, a marvel of the old civilization eons gone, still awaiting its first human occupants. Out here, using forgotten technologies, she hopes to bring back a life that shouldn’t have been lost. But nothing could prepare her for what she’ll face in the ancient halls below.

The experience starts as a character driven journey of discovery, but as it unfolds it evolves into something altogether more punishing. The Palace studies everything you do, everything you are, to use it against you. Gameplay revolves around stealth, action and manipulation, as you face off against the ultimate enemy: Yourself.
  • THE WAY YOU PLAY SHAPES THE GAME
In ECHO everything has consequence: As you try to wield its magical technologies it becomes apparent that the Palace has a will of its own… It creates “Echoes” – exact copies of you in every way – that behave like you and only do the things you do. So the way you play the game shapes your enemy. If you sprint, soon the Echoes will get faster. If you sneak, they will get stealthier. If you shoot, they will learn to shoot back. The game constantly reacts to your every choice and input.
  • LEARNING MECHANICS
The Palace "reboots" every so often, resulting in a blackout. This blackout-cycle is the rhythm at which the Echoes get updated with your latest behavior, learning and unlearning from your actions. During the blackout the palace is blind, giving you the freedom to act without consequence. This is the time to run and gun and do all the things you don’t want the Echoes to learn. The experience is one of being up against your own choices from the last blackout-cycle, giving you a way of shaping the game from cycle to cycle. So no matter if you prefer to go stealth or action one thing is certain, you need to keep your wits about you if you want to survive the Palace.
  • RICH STORY AND ATMOSPHERE
At the heart of ECHO is the story. The game starts as a narrative experience, focused on En and her journey into the Palace and her past. Who is she and what is her connection to the Palace? Who is this man that she needs to revive, and what was the circumstances surrounding his death? Slowly these things are uncovered as she descends into the dark halls below.

Way too much of a good thing

I'd recommend this game, but with a couple of reservations and caveats. The good news is that: 1) This game is drop dead gorgeous! I frequently dropped the controller and backed away from the screen to just gasp and admire the breathtaking geometry of miles upon miles of silver, jade and golden corridors, halls and mausoleums lit by diamond flames. Remember that scene from Lord of the Rings where Gandalf lit a torch in the underground Dwarven Halls? 2) As a stealth puzzle adventure, this game is unique. The vast palace complex you're in, is inhabited by a an enemy who remembers whatever special tricks you used the day before. If you ran out of an elevator, shot them in the face and snuck away, then they'll do the same to you for a while. Stealth however, is king. If they never manage to spot you, it doesn't matter if they can shoot. 3) The game's storytelling is phenomonal. The impossibility of the palace complex, blurs the lines between magic and science. There's this exotic, transangent, mystical quality to everything. The broad strokes in which the two main characters paint the universe around them, speaks to the imagination. There's also a really great, simple partnership between them, full of emnity and comradery, kept together by a simple goal. The bad thing? While the environment is drop dead gorgeous and the concept of a learning enemy is novel, these two things never evolve into something greater. Whenever I marveled at the aforementioned beauty of dozens of miles of palace hallways, it came with the dread realization that I would inevitably be repeating the same rote action across its length. The environment and enemy aren't dynamic enough to stay interesting. You're going to become overly familiar with the furniture and enemy patterns all too quickly. I finished the game, happy with my purchase, but expect ECHO to turn into a repetitive, sterile slog halfway through. Only the story and a new enemy type - right at the very end - made me pull through.

Creepiest game in a long time

Seriously, this game freaks me out :-) The artdesign and especially the lighting is amazing, but I only got to truly marvel at it during the - unexpectedly elaborated - prologue. After that, things start to go sideways for protagonist 'En' pretty quickly. Horror games usually bore me to death, but 'Echo' is really creepy in that you have to face your multiple selves (luckily, not perfect clones .-) The tension builds up quick and I think it's introduced masterfully. Additionally, I like the sound design and voice acting a lot. All in all this game was quite a (pleasant) surprise package!

A ''sci-fi action puzzle'' ?

This is one of the best games to come out on the PC this year.A beautifully told story, encompassing puzzle elements where your actions or INACTIONS shape the obstacles in front of you. GAMEPLAY: What we have here is the core Hitman sneak gameplay enhanced by a few new gameplay systems. The Cycle system and the Echo system. Those two systems are what turns gameplay that most people would consider as action oriented into a fluid puzzle. GRAPHICS: Technically the games engine is adequate and does it's job. What stands out is the art direction and the execution.Clean and beautiful. SOUND DESIGN&VOICE OVER: Both are splendid. I really loved aspects of the musical score and the voice actors did a great job too. They really help you enter this world. STORY:If you enjoy science fiction abstracts and philosophy you will enjoy this story. The scene is grand yet the presentation somehow makes it feel more personal and contained.I don't want to spoil it. If you want an atmospheric sci-fi action adventure that will force you to use your braincells this is the game for you.

Draws you in, then is horrible.

Open sequence and story are wonderful. Then you get a game that is all about repetition and "try again", with very little new to see. I suppose it is creative, but ultimately just very annoying to play. Avoid unless you absolutely love the grind. Very little in the way of exploration or story once you're inside the main game.

Awesome experience for stealth game fans

I personally really enjoyed the experience, as I love stealth games. What intrigued me most about the game was the concept of your enemies learing from your actions. So you end up in a literally 'fight against yourself'. BUT keep in mind that this game is best for gamers also enjoying games like Hitman, Dishonored or alike. I do, so it's fine but be aware that the levels are kind of repetitive from the 'what possibilities do I have' viewpoint and you might not be able to complete levels without stealth. However, if you enjoy conquering challanging levels by planning ahead and maybe trying again than it's really awesome. IN SHORT positive aspects: - awesome story - gorgeous artstyle and graphics - good performance (I'm using Xeon X5650@3,6GHz + GTX980+12GB DDR3 --> 100FPS) - levels look pretty diverse - thrilling game mechanic: learning AI (first game that has such a feature? at least I don't know of any other ones) - very challanging negative aspects: - very difficult: 'easy' is harder than the hardest difficulty in some other games
