Or go deeper and recover the ancient lost knowledge from the hidden tomb chambers of the old ones. Acquire materials with almost magic-like properties and use them to craft insanely powerful gear.
Over 99% of everything can be broken for materials with the right equipment. Do that, and collect the sweet nectar of the old world: plastics, rubber, and metals. There is a reasonable number of different materials to gather. Find Recipes to craftpermanent items and upgrades.
Explore the vast hand-crafted open world and build Outposts to establish your presence. Claim back the land area by area. Find hidden treasures and solve puzzles long ago forgotten. Find your means of escaping the island.
The world after the end is inhabited by nasty creatures. Something vile has affected most of the wildlife and former human inhabitants of the island -- turning them into aggressive beast-like creatures. Slay them and collect their loot. Harvest their organs and provide them eternal rest. Or run away and come back when you're stronger. Fight using various melee and ranged weapons. Create traps and lure monsters in. Do whatever it takes.
You will not be fighting just to maintain the status quo. This IS NOT a game about starving. You won't be constantly looking for a tasty cockroach to fill your over-metabolic stomach while waiting for the unavoidable bliss that is death. You will never die of hunger. You will get more powerful, and unlock permanent upgrades. The world is a dangerous place, and you may take a few steps back once in a while, but eventually you will thrive.

15 hours in, I'm having loads of fun playing this. Yet another zombie survival game (keep 'em coming), but with a focus on crafting to progress the character, rather than just survive.
The monster re-spawning was annoying at first, until I realised it was part of the game make-up, and the story. The re-spawning can be stopped, with the right materials. Getting the materials I need to make/upgrade my gear is a little frustrating at times, but that is only because I desperately want to move on!
On a 28" 4k UHD screen, the colours are fabulous. They are a refreshing change to the genre, in a Torchlight kind of way. They might take away some of the apocalyptic atmosphere to some, but they are beautifully rendered throughout, which makes it a pleasure to play.
It is definitenly a 'one-more-hour' game, always thinking about what I might find next. Can't wait to get back to playing it to be honest.
Top marks to the devs, who I've never heard of before. Will keep an eye on them.
This game has been a lot of fun. The gathering and exploring keep me curious about what is "over there". It reminds me somewhat of Dying Light, but cartoony and isometric--kind of a DL combined with a bit of a Torchlight feel.
There is a lot to do, and it is perfectly doable to play in short sessions or chunks.
The game is more casual that some survival games, with a number of options like different languages (I only play in English so can't speak to if they are accurate tho), color blind mode, removing some screenshake, rebindable keyboard controls, controller support with remappable controls.
For the price there is a lot here--even coop, though I've not tried that yet.
I'm 28 and rarely have time for games anymore. I've certainly never 100%-ed a game in my life. Until now.
The exploration is so much fun and the way the map is designed for organic but directed exploration is a marvel. You can feel the love and thought put into every detail and area.
Thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent on the Island, and I'll be returning as soon as the DLC drops.
Oh and before I forget - this is the first game in years that I have paid full price for - so worth it.
At 70 years old this is 1st game I can play for hours on end and not get bored. Smash,break,kill,. Always finding something I missed. Even have my on home furnished and looks good. Hope new add on comes soon
