Description

Dustborn is a single-player, story-driven action-adventure game about hope, love, friendships, robots…and the power of words.

You play Pax: exile, con-artist, Anomal — with the ability to weaponize language. Looking for a new life and a way out, Pax has been hired to transport an important package from Pacifica to Nova Scotia, across the Justice-controlled American Republic. Sounds like a legit reason for a road-trip, right?

So pack your bags, assemble a crew with their own peculiar powers, and get ready to travel the country!

Explore the stunning Neo-Western landscapes of an alternate history America on a robot-driven tour bus, and stop at a dozen locations along the road to build your crew, manage relationships, complete missions, and face increasingly difficult challenges. But the people you stole the package from want it back, and the authoritarian Justice is hot on your heels, so don’t forget to pack your baseball bat!

(And, oh yeah, you’re travelling undercover as a punk-rock band, so you’ll definitely need to brush up on your musical skills before your next gig.)

At the end of the road lies salvation…but to get there, you’ll need to cross an entire continent.

THE POWER OF WORDS

Words have power. Like, actual power. Fight with Shouts and use Vox in conversations to manipulate people and talk your way out of hairy situations. Craft new words, and learn to wield a lingual arsenal against enemies...and friends.

A ROAD TRIP ACROSS A DIVIDED CONTINENT

On the road across an alternate history America, you’ll stop at iconic locations, take on unexpected assignments, meet a colorful cast of characters, enlist new crew members, and evade (or fight) your pursuers. See beautiful sights along the highway, rendered in a colorful graphic-novel-inspired art style that brings stunning 2D illustrations to 3D life.

A DIVERSE CAST OF CHARACTERS

Your crew is your (found) family. Round up, manage and lean on a motley mob of misfits with peculiar powers, compelling stories and clashing personalities. Branching dialogues lead to choices that shape relationships and change how your crew feels about themselves and others.

GAMEPLAY AS VARIED AS THE LANDSCAPE

In each location you’ll explore, investigate and chat with the people you meet, use the crew to overcome challenges, craft new Shouts and Vox, and rehearse with your band. You might also find yourself throwing Molotov cocktails from a motorbike, swing a baseball bat to take down helicopters…and more. You know, just normal everyday stuff.

Genuinely Exactly What the World Needs

Made by the creators of The Longest Journey and just as much of a thrilling and well-written experience. The negative reviews make it obvious that they do not understand 1: That characters are meant to have flaws, 2: That people who take the bad actions in real life are being satirized, and 3: That the characters are how you choose for them to be, which they would know if they actually played the game. As such they all serve as a great demonstration of the dangers of disinformation that the game itself brings up. When one actually plays the game, it is clear that Dustborn wasn't just some casual project but was written from the heart and with an idea that it wants to convey. The radical leftist idea that words have power and that people should simply think about what they say. If teaching people to listen and be more understanding is "propaganda," then I wish we had MORE "taxes" (artistic grants) going to such games. I would recommend playing on hard mode for the combat to actually mean something. Otherwise they made it skippable. The rhythm segments are enjoyable. Mostly the game is an interactive narrative with branching dialogue and different endings for each of the characters that can be obtained. There is a huge backstory of lore that gives a lot to think about beyond the game itself. The comic book art style is also fun and the music is good.

Solid adventure game, needed messages.

While I'm not a verified owner on GOG, I've played this game on Steam. Don't let review bombing or hateful online comments scare you from getting this game. It's a solid experience. Presentation is very nice, with its comic book style. The characters and story is full of themes and messages that grow more important and relevant, especially with how haters try to attack it. And the gameplay is full of variety. Conversations and gifts you find can affect your bond with characters all the time, there's music mini-games, echo finding to create new abilities. And the combat is surprisingly fleshed out for an adventure game, with bat throws, shout abilities, tag-teams, a skill tree, and more. Character animations can sometimes be stiff, the introduction makes it a bit hard to follow at first (if you don't read the prologue comic), and this game isn't really subtle. But it's clear it doesn't want to be subtle. Especially since haters would be offended no matter how subtle the themes and messages were.

Not Bad, Not Great

I'm mixed about this game. I think the adventure and dialogue elements are great. The combat and music sections are not. Dustborn is at its best when you're taking time to explore the scenery and talk to your teammates. It's at its worst during the combat sequences. I find the reactionary reviews here particularly amusing, in that they could be lifted from Dustborn's NPCs. The combat is not good because many of the animations stutter noticeably at a low framerate. Additionally, your bread-and-butter melee combo puts you at a disadvantage because you're stuck in animation lock while others can wail on you. You're much safer doing ranged attacks by throwing the bat, and using Taunts to heal if needed. Additionally, the blocking mechanics aren't solid and a lot of times doesn't come out when you expect it to. You also don't get quite enough distance out of your dodge roll, so you'll end up getting clipped by enemy projectiles at the end of the roll. Because of this, the combat becomes kind of a chore to beat so you can get on with the story content. The rhythm minigame is also just okay. The music the band plays is not good, save for one or two tracks. I love pop punk, but this is not great pop punk. Even after calibration, the visuals for the notes were arriving too early compared to the hit zone. Also, some art textures during this minigame appear very stretched and blurry on a 4K monitor. Worth mentioning: the music outside of the rhythm minigame is fantastic. The art is phenomenal. I think it has some of the best cel-shading and outlining for real time graphics in awhile. The 2D comic portions after each chapter are also fantastic. If you liked Red Thread's other games, you should play Dustborn. If you like point-and-click adventure games, or reading-heavy games with lots of dialogue, you should try Dustborn. If you're looking for a new Souls-like or rhythm game, you will not like Dustborn. $30 is very overpriced for this title. Grab it at $15 or so.

It is all about relationships and words

The main characters in the game are almost all minoritys, they sometimes talk about topics that you would consider to be "left" (a few minutes of over 20 hours) and you could see some parallels to the world of today (no surprise since the game takes place in a parallel universe of 2030). I personally would not call this propaganda but rather a different pov. In fact the game is a fictional comicbook story like X-Men (each chapter recaps the story and shows choices and percentages in well done comicbookform). The main cast is hunted by a system called "Justice" which was created to serve the people and over time has been misused to opress them. They are hunted because of their powers of which they are afraid of - not because of them being minoritys. The game plays like all those later Telltale-Games but you can actually walk around much more and collect items which you can then gift to members of your cast to unlock new dialogue. You have a guitar hero like minigame and the fighting parts. 90% of the game is about dialogues and how your words influence your relationship with your cast. Each character has a special stat influenced by your dialogue choices that can change between three states and based on the actual relationship state certain events might or might not happen. So while most of the story will not be influenced that much by your choices your relationship and final decisions will. I was almost never forced to (mis)use my powers - so that statement is false. The fighting parts are rare and they feel clunky but you can skip them. German translation is incomplete in a few parts parts and sometimes faulty - a fate many indie devs share. The story has some interesting twists and becomes pretty emotional in the end and if you are willing to let it be ... unfortunately though near the end it feels rushed and as if some part is missing (there's a small timejump). You also cannot save manually. Even with these flaws I really enjoyed my time on the road :)
