Description

It's the 24th century and the colonization of space is not going well. Hyperspace opened the door to the stars, but habitable worlds are few and far in between, overpopulation is still rampant, and our civilization's appetite for resources has only increased. For over a hundred years, the incredibly rich Dust Zone sated this endless appetite, jointly controlled by the United Earth Nations and the Zone Mining Cooperative. But humanity’s fighting chance only lasted for a short hundred years.

Now, it has gone dark. Freighters stopped arriving with supply hauls and humanity is facing an unprecedented crisis. It's up to the commander of UEN's finest fleet, to deploy into the Dust Zone, investigate, and solve the supply chain crisis before it spirals out of control. It's time to demonstrate strategic aptitude in a turn-based management mode. Then, head to the front lines and channel your inner commander in intense, real-time space battles.

  • Command an entire space fleet and survive in the most hostile environment known to man. Secure strategic nodes, harvest the Dust Zone's resources, and expand the fleet to confront the threat to humanity's survival.
  • Customize each individual ship using a detailed designer. Upgrade every vessel with newly researched hulls, modules, and of course, weapons. Every upgrade matters, not just on the ships themselves.
  • Complete side missions to unlock additional fleet stations and strategic options. These can provide one-of-a-kind bonuses in battles, from extra build queues to support powers - potentially turning the tide of the battle at hand or even the entire war.

  • Take command of a custom fleet in intense 4x real-time tactical battles, maneuvering them in a fully 3D combat space.
  • Employ complex, tactical maneuvers to gain the upper hand and defeat superior foes through cunning and strategic brilliance.
  • Summon reinforcements and support powers from adjacent sectors to influence the direction of the battle.

  • Never give up and keep the fight going in the Sector Assault mode to generate a fully randomized starmap, side missions, and enemies, for fresh challenges each time.
  • Use the robust campaign editor and mod.io integration to create and easily share new campaigns with fellow players and craft personalized challenges!

Good mixture of both 4x & Space Battles

TL;DR: If you like both space battles and 4x, this game is worth a try! Note: The "Space battles fall flat" review has a considerable number of factual inaccuracies. There are 12 ships you can build for the faction; homeworld 2 is 15 per. However, you can customise loadouts in this game, so they're more varied than HW. You can also capture the enemy ships, reverse engineer them, and then build them yourself. The enemy ships are slightly more powerful but slower; that's game-balance 101. You can set behaviour of ships (aggressive, balanced, defensive). You can also set your capital ships to fire from maximum weapons range so they don't close in on the enemy. My review: It's a good game that's got a (solo!) developer who's clearly passionate about it. The important part is that it's a mix of both Homeworld-inspired space battles, and 4x games like Master of Orion. This means that neither component of the game is as fleshed out as a "proper" game in either of those genres, but combined they work well. The scripted missions are all very well executed and well designed, with a lot of variet. The ship models and graphics are neat, and I like the idea of allowing ships to fly backwards as a movement order. The game itself is well polished, the voice acting is good, the story decent, and the pew-pew gratuitous. What's not to like? Well, the 4x component was a bit "flat", but that's to be expected for a game that's only part 4x. There's scope for Quality of Life improvements, but the dev is very active and open to feedback, so things are always improving. There are some quirks in the space battle interface too (see Goldenmeaux's review). Formations would be nice. There's also a non-campaign random-sector generated I haven't played yet, but looks interesting, and modding tools to make your own. Overall I really liked the game, and part of me wishes I hadn't brought it on discount.

Space battles fall flat

The idea to combine 4X with Homeworld like fights is an interesting one and on the surface it is well executed. The tech tree isn't to deep, the number of ships you can build is limited, but you can call it steamlined. And because you fit out your ship hardpoints with weapons of your choice you still got tactical deep. In difference to Homeworld you are only allowed to control one faction, because the "bad guys" have to be stronger by simply getting stronger ships. Sadly those are the ships that do look better. And while the 4X mode does work in its limited borders, the 3D space combat is the weak point of the game. There are no formation options, neither can you set the behavior of your ships. Sure, if you order ships somewhere, they will end there in a wall formation. They won't keep this formation while going there. Fast ships will overtake, at last as long they are not "blocked" by the bigger ones unable to overtake (fighters fail attacking by being "blocked" too). And movement will end up in a line "formation". Fighting gets even worse, because the moment ships start to shoot at the enemy, they will start to close in at the enemy until their shortest range weapon is in range. And because they move how they move, they will even block each others line of fire. Your plan was to outfit your cruisers with a long range Gaus, to hares the enemy, until it gets in range of your rocket launcher and finish it up with your guns? The moment the Gaus fires the first ships on full throttle And if you got the "good" idea (as I did) to add a repair beam to your cruisers, so they can support each other. That one is treated as a "weapon" too. One with very short range. So your cruisers want to hug the enemy, while all other weapons are actually longer range. When you loose many more ships (and well outfitted ships are expensive) then needed, because those ships do what they want and your defense starts to break, space battles are not very enjoyable and the game breaks down.

Good, basic 4x/RTS

I will never claim that this is the most perfect game ever. Compare it to Homeworld and it just falls flat. However, left on its own merits, I can honestly say that I recommend it. No, it's not the most polished nor is the game play the best ever. But what it is is: Fun. I had a blast playing this game, despite the odd interface, the guard command that doesn't work, and having to micromanage the herd of ships that behave more like sheep than wolves. I'd love to see this concept expanded upon and the story broadened, but, for now, I got my money's worth and I recommend this game to anyone that is looking for a strategy game that has a little extra in it.

pretty fun

I'm enjoying this a lot. Not overcomplicated but not too simple either. You can just jump in and have fun. Also, the developer is pretty active when it comes to engaging with the community. The price is right too.

Good game and nothing more.

Weak engine and some bugs doing this game mediocre. No need any complex strategy. Graphics are good, but rather simple. I have 16GB 6800XT and game lagging and sometime game freeze. I have fun for couple of games, it's not really bad, in simplicity is strength this game. But need patch. A BIG patch.
