Description
Dungeon Rats is a turn-based, party-based dungeon crawler set in the same world as Age of Decadence. This is an RPG focused almost exclusively on squad level tactical combat for players who enjoy turn-based games in general, and AoD's combat systems in particular. If fighting your way out of a prison mine - and frequently dying in the attempt - is your idea of a good time, you've come to the right place.

Starting out as a new prisoner at the bottom of the gangs-ruled prison hierarchy, and of the prison itself, you must fight to survive and develop your combat skills, acquiring better weapons and equipment as you go. Recruit allies to your struggle or carry on as a lone wolf, and kill anyone foolish enough to stand in your way.

Notable changes from The Age of Decadence:

- Party-based - the most frequently requested feature.
- Flanking and other strategic bonuses. Positioning matters a lot.
- Manual placement of your characters before a fight.
- Charisma determines the number and quality of your party members.
- Skill points are split between the party members: more people means fewer skills points per person and slower level ups.
- New weapons, armor, and creatures.
- 3 difficulty levels: Nice Guy, Tough Bastard, Murderous Psychopath

Features include:
  • Tactical combat system, including standard attacks, aimed attacks targeting specific body parts, and per-weapon special attacks such as Whirlwind and Impale.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons, brew potions and poisons, experiment with Liquid Fire and Black Powder.
  • 8 weapon types: Daggers, Swords, Axes, Hammers, Spears, Bows, Crossbows, and Throwing Weapons, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
  • Fully customizable main character, as well as 10 possible companions, not all of them human (maximum party size is 4).
  • 50 challenging fights and 4 different endings

Top ten of worst games ever created

I'll try to keep this review short: This game allows you to play a party of different characters, but lacks everything you would expect from a party-based rpg. There is no skill system that matters apart from fighting skills, no party interactions, no interesting npcs, no quests that need different skills or characters to solve, no varying path through the game. So basically, you are left with a party and not much of an rpg. All that's there to do are a series of mindless fights. Plus, "Dungeon Rats" is super-hard and even on medium difficulty it will depend on sheer luck and the amount of save-scumming you do whether you are able to finish it or not. Also, this is not the first, but the second time the developer made this sort of flawed design-decision. In the game that preceded "Dungeon Rats", it is the other way around: The game lacks a party and only allows you to go through it solo. But it is, apart from that, designed for an adventuring party. It has a skill system that matters, interesting npcs, lots of quests that need different skills or characters to solve them and even several different paths through the game. So basically, you are left with a party-rpg that was, for the most part, unsolvable, because the game didn't come with a party-option and you had to build your character into a fighter to even have a slight chance of finishing the game, making most of the content totally obsolete. To make such an obvious game-design mistake once is ludicrous. To make it again and by that even surpassing the original mistake is just beyond ludicrous. Both games are legendary in that they need to be noted and remembered for being in the top ten of the worst rpgs that were ever created.

Tedious and random

I already had a not very high opinion of its predecessor but I wanted to give the Developers another chance because I saw how much effort went into their games. But this actually was an even worse playing experience for me. The story is okay as well as the presentation but the game hung itself up constantly during combat so I couldn't end my turns and I had to alt-f4 and restart the fight. Fighting itself (which is basically the only relevant game mechanic) is not challenging as advertised. It is just tedious, random and arbitrary. It doesn't matter how much you prepare and set up your group, you will die anyway, reload, die again, reload, die again and so on. Calling it unfun would be too kind, because it just comes down get a lucky streak of rolls.

Wouldn't advise it to a friend

Lack optimisation, GTX1060 running at full power even in inventory menus while they're just static images. The game is pretty buggy with lights aswell, and pretty slow. Characters are animated very rigidly. The tactical side is well designed though. It's just sad the game feels like it is not finished developping yet, as I doubt anything else will ever be released.

Watch some gameplay first

The reviews on here seem totally polarized, which is suspicious. I urge you to watch some actual gameplay footage somewhere first. Not hyped up reviewers, either, just a typical LP. I personally felt the game was not worth the download even if it were free.
