Description
Dungeon Rats is a turn-based, party-based dungeon crawler set in the same world as Age of Decadence. This is an RPG focused almost exclusively on squad level tactical combat for players who enjoy turn-based games in general, and AoD's combat systems in particular. If fighting your way out of a prison mine - and frequently dying in the attempt - is your idea of a good time, you've come to the right place.

Starting out as a new prisoner at the bottom of the gangs-ruled prison hierarchy, and of the prison itself, you must fight to survive and develop your combat skills, acquiring better weapons and equipment as you go. Recruit allies to your struggle or carry on as a lone wolf, and kill anyone foolish enough to stand in your way.

Notable changes from The Age of Decadence:

- Party-based - the most frequently requested feature.
- Flanking and other strategic bonuses. Positioning matters a lot.
- Manual placement of your characters before a fight.
- Charisma determines the number and quality of your party members.
- Skill points are split between the party members: more people means fewer skills points per person and slower level ups.
- New weapons, armor, and creatures.
- 3 difficulty levels: Nice Guy, Tough Bastard, Murderous Psychopath

Features include:
  • Tactical combat system, including standard attacks, aimed attacks targeting specific body parts, and per-weapon special attacks such as Whirlwind and Impale.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons, brew potions and poisons, experiment with Liquid Fire and Black Powder.
  • 8 weapon types: Daggers, Swords, Axes, Hammers, Spears, Bows, Crossbows, and Throwing Weapons, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
  • Fully customizable main character, as well as 10 possible companions, not all of them human (maximum party size is 4).
  • 50 challenging fights and 4 different endings

Un excellent Dungeon Crawler !

Fan of the AoD universe, I thought to myself: why not test this crawler dungeon? Let's go! What to say: we feel the inspirations of AOD, same combat system with an immersive universe. You learn very quickly to be reasonable (I tried solo and easy mode), I quickly ran out of RATIONS and POTION (with alchemy thoroughly). So I had to load an old save game. And even being REASONABLE, I did not succes the last fight. Too bad for me, I miss the achievement ... :( :( In short, I will try again in a few weeks the adventure with companions. The advantages of the game - We finds again the universe of AoD - Artifacts make your brain burrow - You have to increase the stats intelligently. - The game is rather long (20 hours for me) and for this price, it's really cheap. - I like the graphics and the music. - It's a crawler dungeon and the levels are quite varied. The - - I have the impression that solo mode does not benefit from the dialogues, but I think it is to take advantage of the replayability. - Maybe add more different creatures. In any case, I spent 20 super hours of play. When I see that triple AAA at 70 € whitch annoys me after 5 minutes ... In short developers from IRON TOWER, plz take my money and continue to make me travel. I had to appreciate less than a dozen games in my life, I tested 2 of yours and I am already addicted.Of course I will buy your next game. seems better before you delve into it

When AoD came out, I was intrigued by it and played a demo. Didn't really like it, but combat seemed promising so I decided to wait for a (hefty) price drop. I watched the combat tutorials for it, and all this heavier vs lighter weapon stuff, DOTs, criticals, destroyable armours, targeted attacks etc seemed too good to pass up. So, now they put it into a game of its own, I jumped right in. Knowing what to expect, I made a character carefully - a dexterous dodger also able to lead. Turned out good, because I got good complementary escorts - meaning, all with different skills and weapons, good for getting a feel for it. Few hours and dozen battles later, one thing is clear - all the good stuff I mentioned still doesn't translate into good, juicy, convincing fights. For one simple reason - in spite of all the AP values and stuff, there's NO BATTLE LOGIC APPLIED. No battle stances - so no way to put near-dead char to defense, let alone have him feint and retreat. Damage doesn't prevent anything - 1 HP soldier still moves, dodges, hits as if completely healthy. Knock someone to the ground with a maul - he spends few AP to get up and that's it - no confusion, no blur, nothing. Positioning means nothing except reach - attack (engaged enemy) from behind, attack from side, you get same chance to hit as frontally. You can target legs, head, arms, even artery - but it doesn't take enemy type into account, its there for humans and ants equally. Shield-bash an ant, anyone? Oh well. All in all, it plays pretty much as a spreadsheet or something - have 8 AP after movement? I'll try two 4 AP hits... So, battles are bland. Story, dialogues etc - didn't see much of it, scenery is meh, animations also, but they would all do. Especially for 10$ - I do not expect a cheap game to be at, say, Blackguard level. But combat just doesn't do, for me - especially because I played better free varieties. As is, I gave it 3 stars - low price, indie and all - but even that might be generous.

Low Story Great Mechanics

Perfect for those who are tired of boring dialog and juvenile whining characters. Old school simple story with in depth combat mechanics.

Should have stayed in the mine.

Questionable UI and writing, terrible combat. It's essentially a Fallout 1 clone, set in ancient Greece. Story and objective is to simply escape the mine, where you are a slave. As RPG elements, it has a few encounters with simple choices, but they only determine how much loot you get or how much risk you take. NPCs are forgettable and the opposing villains have about 3 shallow lines of text before you kill them. Most encounters lead to combat. And the combat is not great from the start, with very simple move & hit mechanics, very few tactical options. The combat gets worse as you progress. Your characters never gain extra hitpoints, but enemies gain extra damage, so eventually your main character is just getting 2-shot by most opponents. The game also floods you with ranged enemies and bomb-throwers, who will just nuke you off the battlefield. In combination with the lack of tactical options for your team, it just boils down to reloading over and over, until you get perfect RNG. Avoid this game if you value your time and sanity.

A decent dungeon crawler

When you come into Dungeon Rats expecting a squad based dungeon crawler with lite roleplaying and a lot of combat, you won't be disappointed. if you expect it to be like age of decadence, you absolutely will be. You HAVE to fight, and you HAVE to build your character(s) based on combat. story is there, you can get immersed in it, you always feel like there is a stake to what you do, I really enjoy my playthroughs and come back to the game at least once a year.
