The Difinitive Strategy Game
Dungeon Kepper is bullfrogs best, and that is saying a lot. Bullfrog before there downfall (thanks EA) was the king of the Strategy and Management genre, releasing greats like Theme Hostpital, Populus, Syndicate, Theme Park and Quake III Arena just to name a few. Dungeon Keeper is the cream of this very tasty crop and defined many childhoods. It's immersive, humourous and deep, it makes you feel truely evil but in the best possible way. Its systems are deep and it's levels are not linear. It's your dungeon and this game recognises this and gives you full control. Additionally while most strategy games are slow in pace this one forces you to think and move fast. Now on to the port. DOSBOX has it's problems but mostly they can be rectified using various fixes and tricks. It would be nice if this version was a HD remaster which got rid of pestering niggles like the low resolution and sometimes stuttering framerate but that doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon. You may ask why would this be in anyway better than Dungeon Keeper 2. My awnser to this would be that this game has a lot more charm and humour and has aged a bit better in my opinion. Dungeon Keeper 2 is still a seminal game but my love lies with Dungeon Keeper 1. Playing both is a great choice and would definitely recomend doing so in chronological order. Please ignore the mobile Dungeon Keeper at all cost. Deeper Dungeons, the expansion pack included with this Gold edition of the game is also worth your time and attention as it just adds to an already amazing game. In conclusion if you can deal with the dated graphics I would definitely recomend you buy this game as it is truely great and comes with added content that just makes it all worthwhile.
