Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients
Description
Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer.

Eons ago the Drox ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost necessary. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox built a starlane system for quick travel amongst the stars, colonized and conquered millions of planets, and ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was devastating.

Thousands of years later, the Drox are extinct, but the secretive Drox Operative guild lives on. They have learned their lesson though: loyalty to any one race is foolish. They now work for whoever can pay. And pay they do! Empires might span hundreds of planets and thousands of ships, but when a critical task arises, they still turn to an Operative.

In the new space race, the major races are scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy by diplomacy, technology, war, or any other means their scheming minds can contemplate.

As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage all of those annoying people, build thousands of buildings, play nice with your enemies, or balance the budget. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe. Not many screw with an Operative captaining a Dreadnaught!

  • Explore a dynamic and evolving galaxy
  • Explore a unique sector of the galaxy in every game, with different "monsters", ship components, quests, and even races
  • Fight in the galactic war between the various alien races
  • Battle hundreds of different enemy starships
  • Build the coolest and deadliest starship in the galaxy
  • Outfit your ship with thousands of components and crew
  • Adventure with your friends with co-op multiplayer

The Finest Space Game of the Last Decade

Imagine you're a mercenary inside of a 4X game that the computer is playing around you. This, at its bare essence, is Drox Operative. You're free to basically influence each sector however you wish, so while you'll get tons of quests, it's up to you to have a long-term goal for yourself. Do you want a military or diplomatic victory? Do you want to help the robots or the tree people? It's entirely up to you. You could even ignore these larger political machinations and just follow wherever the quests take you, and the universe will still unfold around you. Alliances will form, wars will break out, skirmishes between empires will occur and much more. This is truly a rich tapestry of choice that really is unmatched in space gaming.

Fun to play but novelty soon wears thin

I found myself loving Drox Operatives for the first few weeks. I didn't mind the repetitive quests given out, the constant swarms upon swarms upon swarms within recursive swarms, the feeling like a "tiny cog with a DeathStar sized machine" etc..... I just found the game a lot of fun. The novelty soon wore off when I started to see the "huge variety" of certain entities in this game were in fact "all the same". The weapons techtree is a very good example, it starts off with basic Laser Cannons, going through Plasma Cannons, Particle Beams, Ion Cannons, Phasors etc even after 12+ months I'm less than halfway to the end of this at Lv44..... but you realise after a while all those exotic weapons are ALL the same, they all do the same "thermal damage" type, all have fire rates of 0.75 sec per shot, all have a range of "25" (though some random buffs to each weapon item can alter those), they all have the same SFX and GFX (a red beam)..... not like on MoO2 say, where they were all distinctive. All that changes is the damage output and energy consumption. Boundaries are very blurred too..... even a low tech Laser of the "Excellent MkV" variety can out perform an much more higher tech Ion Cannon of the "Cheap MkI" variety. ALL item / weapon / drive / shield etc items suffer the same "all the same as each other, just given lots of varied exotic names" issue. That's the biggest demotivator that could make you quit Drox for good. I still play it occassionally after finding the above issues, but in small doses. Still, the fact this one has remained installed on my PC for over 12 months says something about it's enjoyability, I also found Drox to be worthy enough to risk buying the "Invasion of the Ancients" expansion at a later date. It's not a bad expansion in fact. NOT worth the full price of £15.99 + £9.99 for the expansion, however. Wait for a good sale. Trouble is, with "Drox", sales are quite rare!

Great Game! I keep coming back to it.

It's the same game engine Soldak has used in it's previous games, but they've made a lot of improvements to it. The ship configuration works completely different than their fantasy games and can be a little daunting to learn at the start until you start to get familiar with the item icons. I played it without the expansion a while and definitely think this game needs the expansion. It opens up so many options in your items and my favorite is it adds a power to each race, some of them involve item crafting so you can make some epic equipment. It's a little harder to pick up than the other Soldak games, but there are guides out there. Personally I like the old school style of just figuring it out myself rather than reading all the tips on how to exploit the least balanced items, and these games are perfect for that. The thing I don't like is gameplay is rather similar between the classes. In Soldak's fantasy themed games it's a whole new game going from a archer to warrior to mage type class, but in this one it's just minor item tweaks. After playing through another game, I always come back to Soldak games. They're definitely my favorite!

Another take on Action RPGs

Soldak is really good on random/evolving worlds with action RPG and loot. This take on their well known game mechanics in space keeps all the good stuff from other soldak games. It blends game mechanics from Din 's Curse and Depths of Peril. I am not a fan of how the game controls on this space world, but the game has enough going on to be fun and addictive. Also, price point is ok.

Addictive, but flawed

For me, this games is hack&slash RPG meets Last Federation meets devs whims. Building up your ship to be a killing machine (picking your starting race, gear and stats wisely) as well as picking the most expedient path to victory in any sector can be rewarding. Don't expect a deep diplo: Influencing the relations involves accepting/solving the right quests, being at the right place at the right time (seriously, protecting a single planet from destruction by a fleet of ships will propel your relations into the stratosphere, even if you are just assisting) and playing with rumors. As long as you have enough capital, you can be the main factor behind who will like or hate each other. Don't expect deep combat depth either. Combat in this game is a matter of equipping the right gear, playing properly with fight/flight dynamic (think wolf tactics) and shooting down the alphas first with the right weapon(s). Also, taking advantage of reactor/shield/energy/repair boosts (think of it as the space equivalent of potions in RPGs and shield regen or armor repair will be a real chore in this game until you make extensive use of boosts) will make the difference between success and failure, especially when tackling bosses. Inventory management is bad (think Baldur's Gate). This game throws huge amount of sellable loot at you (significant source of income) and relatively limited inventory. To add insult to injury, planets have limited amounts of capital to buy your loot. Also, the game will throw many hugely annoying obstacles: maps are littered with wormholes that can throw you halfway across the galaxy and indestructible mines/nerfs that affect only you (and will cripple you badly or just plain kill you). I could go on an on about questionable design decisions with this game, but character cap is reached. If you like space sims and RPGs, you will probably be very entertained by this game and hugely frustrated by questionable design decisions that mars the gameplay.
