Description
DROD: King Dugan's Dungeon
What happened to Beethro on his first excursion into King Dugan's Dungeon? Well, mainly it was just the usual dungeon exterminator's subterranean grind: killing off thousands of roaches, chopping through tar, guzzling mimic potions, and generally ridding the King's underground chambers of all that should not be there. But also Beethro met an unexpected enemy, created lifelong grudges against him, and learned secrets that would later motivate his journey to Rooted Hold.

DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold
Swordplay and puzzles combine in this thinking man's dungeon crawl. It's simple to learn, with just a handful of commands to master. But the unique gameplay provides an amazing depth. A detailed overhead view shows monsters, obstacles, and other game elements. You have as much time as you like to contemplate your next move. So this is a good game for relaxing, but also terrifically involving once you get started. You'll be hooked by the story of Beethro and his troublesome nephew, Halph. Our heroes set off on a harmless jaunt, but end up far below the surface, chased by a clownish madman. They begin to uncover a vast, underground bureaucracy, and things only get stranger the further they delve. You've got over 350 rooms ahead--each one a singular challenge for you to conquer.

DROD: The City Beneath
You begin as a rather ugly man named "Beethro" who travels deep beneath the ground. There are other people down there too, citizens of a mysterious "Rooted Empire", that are carving tunnels and building things. Beethro just wants to know why, but it's hard to get a useful answer. He was always fond of saying "there is no problem that can't be solved with a really big sword," but upon arriving at the underground capital, Beethro is startled to find that nobody seems interested in attacking him. No, for some reason, they would rather persuade him to stand in a very long line.
  • 25 sprawling levels with over 350 custom designed rooms, including secret rooms.
  • 17 types of monsters with greatly varying abilities and behavior.
  • 11 different characters, some of which contribute to puzzles as well as story development.

The longest, most puzzling vgame ever.

I always thought this game franchise had potential when I was just 5 playing DROD 1's shareware demo, and it's still proving difficult for me as a 23 yr old. This is the best puzzle computer game anyone could ever get. I'll just list what I think, below: CONSUMER WARNING: You better love solving puzzles that involve multitasking like in a scenario where... -You might have to kill enemies on the right-side of a room, BUT to do that... you have to keep pivoting your sword to the left because an enemy Roach mama is laying eggs that hatch on the left-side of the room THAT YOU CAN'T GET TO... until you deal with the right-side first. You could get trapped VERY EASILY, I'll add, in those type of rooms. Most others in a level are easy to moderately challenging. -Each game has 20 levels, each with ~10-20 rooms. Each room could have monsters in it you must kill with your sword(or other weapons past DROD1) to advance to the next room(depending on design; you could be locked out from proceeding to the next room if a room is not cleared of roach monsters, tar monsters, etc.). Thus, each DROD installment is time-consuming. -When you move, all enemy AI moves (except for some monsters)(Some may move towards you, or flee away from you) -When you pivot your sword CCW/CW, all enemy moves. -Most pathfind in a straight line to you, but each monster AI is designed to be unique. The AI is predictable, but also can be overwhelming. -Each game has an undo button, BUT only 1-turn is reversible... so don't rush. Think. DROD 1: Architect's Edition(The free DROD 1 without secret rooms)... didn't....have... an undo button... It was torture finishing that game. -OG Webfoot music isn't included...but it's online. -Progressing through each level can be thought of like going into an even lower basement level of a KD's castle before SS(You reach the other side of the world)... which is what fascinates me. It has a basic "Underworld Descent" story theme.

It looks so simple

I started the first game a few months ago without knowing anything about the series. What a pleasant surprise to see just how deep and enjoyable this game is. It's built off of a deceivingly simple engine of tile and turn based movement and combat. You move one turn, and then the world gets a turn of it's own. And what a world it is. Bugs, slime, soldiers, and other various enemies and impediments will test your strategy, your puzzle solving skills, and your resolve. By the end of the game you will be a true Smitemaster. I finished the first game in 80 hours and now I'm moving on to the second game. The designers have done a fantastic job designing the game in a way that teaches you the game mechanics naturally while challenging you at the same time. There is great character in game as well as you won't soon forget Beethro, the bugs, the soldiers, the switches, the doors, the arrows, the tiles, the slime, or the secret levels. This game is worth full price. If you can sink yourself in to these games they will give you hundreds of hours of fun. And there are level editors.

Braintwister alert

like posted here already: sometimes you are just stuck with some tar over your eyes and dont see the solution, but overall when you either try around a few times or look around the net you get the missing idea, got a few rooms already that needed a night to sleep over to finally beat em, Good braintwister overall :)

there's no better puzzle game series

I don't know if it is the best puzzle game, but I know it is either the best or tied with the best. There's no reason for less than 5 stars! So many interesting puzzles.
