Driftland: The Magic Revival Demo is available here

After a devastating war between ancient mages, a powerful spell is all that holds together the shattered planet of Driftland. Faced with the destruction of their entire civilization and life on the planet, the warring factions called a truce and tried to repair the damage – but it was already too late. By using all their remaining magic to cast a powerful spell, they managed to keep their world in relative balance.

Many dark ages passed, but when all seemed lost, a ray of hope emerged once more: new sources of magic appeared, and new mages were given birth to across the planet. Now, as the dormant conflicts once again surface, this rediscovered power will determine whether Driftland is restored to its former glory or wiped from the cosmos entirely.

You take on the role of a Mage Overlord with your own castle, tower, and a small realm on one of the landmasses. With your unique powers, you can explore a procedurally generated world and connect floating lands to expand your kingdom.

Gameplay focuses on setting general goals for all your units without the need to micromanage each of them. The warriors, archers, and mages under your command are able to tame and ride different kinds of flying beasts and create various aerial units.

  • Procedurally generated world
  • Resource- and magic-based economy
  • Move and terraform scattered landmasses with magic
  • Tame and ride dragons and other creatures
  • Explore and fight on the same map
  • Set goals instead of directly controlling units
  • Single player, campaigns, and multiplayer

Unique gameplay with bad balance

This is really interesting game with unusual mechanics. Strategical command without micromanagemet is pretty nice. Remind me good old games like Netstorm and some conceptions of Eador, but with classical fantasy RTS process. I found only one, but really big bad thing - very poor balance. Examples: - Dark elves need not mining... Absolutely. Use ritual for extracting resources and get unlimited steel, gold, etc. And all of that for a one moment. And you can use it after 5 minutes, only buy one cheap tech. - Gnome get flyers in 1 minute. Say hello to every chests around. - Fair economical system. Very annoying. But despite of all this it stay good game.

Somewhat good, but tedios game.

Races are not balanced and a lot of the skill to unlock are bad. Good campaign, but not very good Quest explanation. At the end of the map, i have so much buildings, that if one explode its very hard to find it. Some times AI to all the units is idiotic. Some times explorers refuse to search the islands. I got this game on discount and i dont regret it. I dont recomend playing norlam game vs bots, coz they cheat hard. I have tried free for all game whit all bots on huge map. And they started attacking only me!

Sins of a Solar Empire meets Majesty

A real time 4X in the vein of Sins of a Solar Empire taking place on a shattered fantasy world made up of floating islands. You and your opponents are the first wizards born in a generation powerful enough to bring the floating shards together and bridge them, setting off a war to see who will be the first to rebuild and subsequently rule the world. In addition to Sins, Driftland is influenced by the Majesty games. Your army is made up of individual hero units who you don't control directly, but rather influence their actions by placing reward flags throughout the world. The economy is nothing like Majesty, though, none of the heroes have their own money, you're instead balancing the limited housing each shard can support with the land-hungry farming necessary to feed them so your citizens can be put to work extracting resources used to equip your heroes with various skills to make them more potent fighters against hostile barbarians and rival kingdoms. The most powerful floating islands you can capture have nests on them where heroes can tame a flying mount ranging from a giant raven to an actual dragon (Dwarves don't tame, they build their own flying machines). Obviously in a world of floating islands, heroes who can fly have a huge advantage. Another game that shows off the Unreal Engine 4 at its best. Gorgeous glowing spell effects, close zoom levels that let you see a dizzying horizon of stars above the exposed planet's core. And each of the 4 factions has their own separate musical score that changes dynamically with the action.

Try it, why not

This game is quite interesting and has a lot of positives, such as AI, graphics, music, art and original mechanics. It is most definitely worth your money and time if you like management and RTS games. While I’m a fan of Majesty 1 & 2, and I still prefer those games over Driftland, I still enjoyed playing. Player needs to be patient with this game somewhat, as tutorial is not that great, and I see a lot of people quitting very early. But game does become more enjoyable later. Campaign is long, and has some interesting missions, though you could find it to be a bit repetitive. It can be challenging, but not overly complex. I was not impressed by the story or the way it was presented. Graphically, the game is superb, but you will struggle to see the difference between buildings, so it can be improved. Music is fine, serves the gameplay well. Animations and sound are good enough. It was nice to play with different races, that all have unique twist. To conclude, this game has a lot of room for improvement in almost all areas, however, it is relaxing, fun and it has solid foundations. Some expansion or a sequel could build on core ideas even further. One important note is that game had no bugs, issues, crashes and it ran very smoothly for me.

Offers nothing that isn't in the demo

Tried the demo, which promised a little bit of interest in regards to setting and an unfamiliar gameplay mechanic to me, I picked up the game for about 3,-. Which is good, as that's all it is worth. Unfortunately, that's also as far as this game goes. I was prepared for a lacklustre story, but if the gameplay is good, that can be ignored. Unfortunately, where the poor story-telling delivered little as expected, the rest of the game beyond the demo offers nothing that wasn't already done. You grab an island, drag it over, put something on it to get resources and wait until your funds are sufficient to do it again, until you win the game. There are little to no tactics involved and there is little to no challenge. This is a waste of your time and money, and I'm not mad having spent my own on it, I am just disappointed with what this could have been.
