Early Access review

Older Quake 1 gamer is very happy.

I prefer the feel, mechanics and atmosphere of Quake 1. I'm playing through Quake 4 again right now with my own tweaks and it only drives home where the series went awry, as Romero himself point out; Quake 2. A few recent games like Dusk and Amid Evil are pretty close to bringing back that old Quake 1 feel from before the switch to the Quake 2 / Doom 3 aesthetic. 1C themselves also has Wrath going on which is actually coded in the original Quake engine, but they are taking a REALLY long time to finish it especially given they are life-long Quake modders. This game, even at this this early stage, is more what I want from a Quake clone. The mechanics are simplified enough and the atmosphere engaging enough that I can immerse myself. It's not heart attack, "soulslike" difficult and it doesn't have a bunch of stupid, pointless Doom Eternal style gunplay gimmicks. I wish more Quake clones were like this one. My only gripe is it uses save stones. Please, add a quicksave key like F5. Please. As an old man...

100% my kinda game!

Helps satisfy the same itch that Doom Eternal has been scratching since early last year. Dread Templar feels fresh and engaging, with energetic music, tight gunplay and rad weapons. I haven't completed all of the early access content just yet, but I've had a lot of fun so far. Only complaint I have so far is that I died instantly when I fell into a spike pit, made me repeat a few minutes of gameplay. Some other boomer shooters(*cough* Doom Eternal) have spoiled me with a little more leniency with platforming mistakes, but it's not a biggie. Game doesn't have a ton of platforming so far, it's a minor concern. So far I've been playing it on the normal difficulty mode, and I'm wishing I'd played it on hard mode. If you're a boomer shooter aficionado, start on hard, disregard normal. I will say that I haven't found a use for the bullet time feature yet, so far it feels totally unnecessary. I play at 1440p 170FPS and have speedy reflexes, so maybe it's different for others. $15 is a crazy-good price for the game, it's an easy impulse buy and I haven't had this much fun with an indie arena shooter since Prodeus. I highly recommend this one.

loved this as much as dusk and amid evil

completed this on normal! cons 💀 some enemies will envelope you. like. you're standing in them 💀 some throwaway enemies, some look similar to others 💀 the story, writing, and voice acting is … something. 💀 the weapon order is weird, takes getting used to 💀 cooldown for katana throw is way too long to be useful 💀 secrets are ridiculous to find, but side areas (bonus sections) are easy to stumble into goods 🌞 the level design is amazing. variety of spaces with different types of pathways 🌞 so many cool enemies!! most of them are projectile based. no hitscanners!!!!!!! 🌞 every weapon has its place... pistols are always useful as long as you keep upgrading them! 🌞 sound design is so good, the pistol sound is one of the big reasons i was so into this lol 🌞 cool upgrades that really alter your weapons 🌞 soundtrack is pretty cool!! sometimes it's that metal/electronic stuff mick gordon is known for which i don't like but it's not as ADHD as that 🌞 it just feels really really good, which i think is the most important part quake (1996) is my fav game of all time, so i can't possibly compare DT to that.

Highly recommended

I am only a few levels into the game, but felt compelled to write a review (my first ever) already because it just feels so darn good to play! It handles beautifully, the weapons so far are great and satisfying to use. The controls are as smooth as butter and it even has that wee tilt you get when strafing like in Turok. (probably in other games too, just Turok is what I remember it from.) Really looking forward to playing more!

Excellent thus far

Has been a joy to play thus far! I am only about an hour in, but like Roobotshepard (other reviewer) I felt compelled to complete my first GOG review. It seems like a lot of love has gone into the game's design, like the devs really respect/love the retro FPS: In addition to really representing that genre well IMO they went above and beyond with their own creative touches, which supplement the overall experience without causing detriment to the overall retro FPS feel of the game. TBH, I have been a little bored of games lately, but this game really is scratching an itch I didn't know I had!
