This is the future of Gaming! Look. Before you leap. This isn't some corny collection of cardboard dungeons and dragons. It's a brilliant new vision of RPG Action Adventure. With Real-time 16 Meg 3D Scrolling like you've never seen. Plus an incredible Hero's Eye View of the danger. Through caves of fire and meadows of ice. Against brutal Demons and unforeseen evils. All the way to a showdown you'll never forget. Bring your bow, your sword, your magic and don't blink - or you're doomed!
It's an old SNES game that's a spiritual sequel to Drakken. Side scrolling beat'em up combat mixed with a 3D overwold and small towns. It's a pretty tight game yet there's a pretty big world to wander around in. A helpful NPC will help keep you on track by hinting at what you should do next.
I really enjoyed it, putting in 12 hours and then the game crashes after beating a boss in a temple late in the game. Very frustrating, but I'm glad I bought it on sale. I hope they can fix this issue, I really would like to finish it.
Hey! Don't let good reviews get to your head. First of all, I've never played it before, so I'm new to this game. And I know it's an old game, and out of respect for it I try not to wear modern glasses. (Otherwise I wouldn't have done it for 11 hours)
Even though the game didn't come with the necessary manual, the first six hours were a great experience for me! Smooth, silky action, almost no Caton simulator, horizontal board arcade-style combat and a rich first-person open world, with a story that's old but never out of date.
So you may wonder why I didn't continue until the game was finished, which I'll explain in a few moments.
It all started when I entered the desert and NPCS told me that a sandworm had eaten a wizard and that a horn was required to enter. I was a little confused and stuck here for about an hour. Had to go to the network to find a few customs clearance video to solve the problem.
At the end I am going to the desert Temple, and I would never have thought of using that place to open the temple without watching the video walkthrough.
I actually accepted all of this, and I accepted when the beast told me to get approval and found several things, until the flashpoint of all this: "The swamp" I walked around, and I found that the routine was exactly the same as in the desert, and even more so.
"Oh no!" Inside me came a voice mixed with irritability and discomfort.
Then I flinched, I did not have the patience, I chose to escape! I'll admit that it has a good amount of content, but it would be nice to sacrifice a little bit of the realism of the adventure to increase player comfort.
When I saw this on GOG, my mouth dropped. I had not played this game in nearly 30 years. I loved the story, the world, the music, the combat. It may not rate as high in your book, but it does mine.
This is an open-world fantasy-RPG hybridized with a brawler, which is an interesting mix. Gives a feeling that your success is more than just having bigger, badder numbers. This is it's big selling point. It sounds small, but it is actually quite important. A large percentage of the game is spent in combat and it is your primary interaction outside of moving. Of related note, (over) leveling (within reason) isn't a chore. This allows you a lot of freedom to set your own difficulty level. The game feels pretty forgiving overall, like the designers generally tried to give the player every reasonable way out they could. (though this didn't prevent them from lobbing a few curveballs)
The story is probably not going to be compelling and boils down to; child-of-destiny rescues loved one from evil wizard. The writing is pretty typical fantasy fare (overwrought by today's standards) with the occasional bad joke.
A person can probably complete a first pass in 10-20 hours with a guide. There is at least one guide and a 'let's play' available as of this review.
Overall, I found it to be a generally pleasant & well put-together experience, with some marring caused by the lack of a manual and the occasional platforming.
Pros:
Solid progression rate.
Generally satisfying combat.
Cons:
Overworld travel is a bit clunky.
Utilizes save points.
No in-game volume control.
No manual.
Hints:
You can push (some) statues.
Sometimes you have to fall into a pit to advance.
