great mod held back by 20yo tech
Let's just assume Phobos starts with a 9/10, because on paper it's basically everything you could want from a Doom 3 overhaul — and a few things you probably don't. • better story than you're probably asking for (although arguably too much of it) • great level design • great art direction and attention to detail • above average sound work. • weapons feel punchy and distinct making the main point of the game feel good So what's the problem? The problem is, for some reason, the game only works on what is essentially the first ever iteration of idTech 4, from 2004. And that comes with a number of issues, but cheifly among them... you'll be stuck at 60fps. This mod doesn't run on BFG Edition or even dhewm3 for some reason. In case you're wondering, RBDoom3BFG is objectively the best way to play Doom 3, and vanilla idTech 4 is objectively the worst. My monitor is 240Hz, meaning this mod runs at a 75% reduction in smoothness compared to everything else, compared to what I'm used to. Unfortunately for me, I just can't play Doom 3 at 60fps in 2025, and so, a 9/10 mod translates to 3/5 stars. It's almost tragic.
