We need the original on here

The gameplay changes, lack of mac and linux versions, checkpoint save system, inferior Doom 1 and 2 sprites (like the health kit sprites), bad performance, and hidden multiplayer make this significantly inferior to the original and make the new features really not worth it. If you want to play an unadulterated Doom 1+2 experience, you should buy them separately (they can be bought here), and playing them through a good source port like GZDoom. If you want to play No Rest for the Living you can play it using the Doom Combined mod or by launching it with ZDL. It's a real shame that Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil aren't available in their original versions (likely due to licensing agreements with Bethesda). Either way, it's a real tragedy, as I wholeheartedly recommend getting the original disc version or finding it elsewhere (like Steam). The only real drawbacks the original has are less widescreen and modern hardware support, which can be fixed by using a sourceport like dhewm 3. If you have nothing else, this is worth playing, and the new campaign is nice, but overall if you can avoid it, I would highly recommend playing the original versions instead.

difference between Vanilla and BFG

BFG may use an updated engine, but the graphics is actually far worse, because the consoles can't handle the game. Here are some examples of how shit it is. - Corpses no longer stack like real physics should, instead they just ignore each other and occupy the same space and overlap each other. - Most light effects are now fake, such as when you shoot a gun, the environment used to light up, now it's completely gone because it's a "fake" lighting effect. Other than that and many many more problems there's also the problem of the flashlight. The game was designed with the flashlight in mind, and one level even depended on it, where someone held a flashlight for you and you had to escort him. Now it's become a joke, since you have a flashlight 100% of the time, so that level, as well as other parts of the game, becomes a joke. And the mods that used to make doom3 break down your most expensive graphics card even today? Forget it, nobody bothered to make the mods for this new piece of crap called the BFG edition.

Well worth a buy despite what others say

Doom 3 was a great game when it first came out. Whether on the PC or the seemingly impossible port to the Xbox it was a showpiece of Graphics and Engine and really is quite unique in the FPS and Doom world. While Doom 1 & 2 and the new Doom 2016 share a lot in common I found Doom 3 is almost more like a Spin off than part of the main series. And that's not a bad thing at all. Doom 3 BFG is a nice remaster of sorts of the original while including its later released Expansion and as a Bonus the best ports of Doom 1 & 2 (Just ask Digital Foundry Retro) which are perfect for playing on todays modern PC's with updated controls to match. As for Doom 3 BFG its got lots of neat extra's and updates to make it an easy beast to deal with these days, certainly on the graphics front while the gameplay tweaks also make things a little easier to deal with. I would still recommend grabbing a copy of the original Doom 3 just to try it out for yourself and the subtle differences but with BFG you can enjoy it all in 4K or whatever Resolution you wish as opposed to the original's Max of 1600*1200 (Can be modded and fiddled with to get more Resolutions but that is what BFG does for you) or for most people with a 1080p monitor just 1280*1024! All in all its a great buy and the only reasons for not giving it 5 stars are as follows: One, no cloud support for saves which is a shame (the original ironically did on another Digital platform but BFG doesn't on any? Two, it doesn't feature the brilliant Co-Op mode for campaign that was added to the Xbox port? Why this couldn't of been included is a mystery and frankly a poor show as it would of made BFG the definitive version especially with the Doom 1 & 2 ports. Oh well you can't have it all I suppose....

Original Doom 3

The original Doom 3 is such a atmospheric and action paced Master Piece. I love the original Classics, but the Redesign of the Monsters here are very well done and very welcome. I recommend to use HD Textures, they make the Game look up to Date and makes it even superior to the BFG Edition. The original has better Design in how the Lightning is done, also some Effects are missing in the BGF Edition. The Eyes of your Enemies also don't gloom in the Dark. Alls the Stuff that is going on in the Industrial Complex and the Depiction of Hell is so great and unique. Love it! Shotgun is a oneshot Killer, it just forces you to overcome your Fear and get close to your Enemy. Your Light is a handy Tool to "kill" Corpse... To prevent them to scare you when they stand up :P

I spent 20 minutes punching turkeys.

Doom 3 takes the Half-Life approach to the game. You are Generic Marine Guy (not to be confused with Doomguy who is much cooler) who just got transferred to the UAC base on Mars for...reasons, I guess. You arrive with a couple UAC higher-ups who are there to talk to Mr. Obvious Bad Guy about him being an obvious bad guy. Your first assignment is to find a missing scientist (not Mr. Obvious Bad Guy) and as soon as you do, the invasion starts. From there, you get from level to level finding new weapons and uncovering more of the basic plot through PDAs you find, which act as keys as well as pre-recorded audio logs and email logs. Doom 3 has the best Hell levels of any Doom game, and it's just a shame they were all so short. Play the regular game or the BFG Edition, they're both perfectly fine. Play the regular game if you're going for more of a "horror" vibe, play the BFG Edition if action is more your jam.
