Story
You’ve come here for a reason. The Union Aerospace Corporation’s massive research facility on Mars is overwhelmed by fierce and powerful demons, and only one person stands between their world and ours. As the lone DOOM Marine, you’ve been activated to do one thing – kill them all.

A Relentless Campaign
There is no taking cover or stopping to regenerate health as you beat back Hell’s raging demon hordes. Combine your arsenal of futuristic and iconic guns, upgrades, movement and an advanced melee system to knock-down, slash, stomp, crush, and blow apart demons in creative and violent ways.

Bridge from past to present

A lot of firsts in this DOOM game. It saw the debut of the idTech 6 engine under the stewardship of new technical leads at a post-Carmack id Software. It arguably kickstarted the new wave of boomer shooters now prevalent in the indie space. It carries the tone and visual design of DOOM 3. Yet, it updates the gameplay and worldbuilding with modern trends like being lore heavy, but only if you want it to be in the pause menu, or RPG-lite character skills and enhancements over time. The last two points I'm not too terribly keen on, but for those wanting more character in a post-Wolfenstein TNO world of "first person shooter, but also a story", this gives some of that, and grinding for skills does give the game an extra sense of progression beyond simply collecting coloured key cards and seeing the end of the level. Arcade Mode also adds some replay value, to say nothing of the MP modes. I've gotten the platinum on PS4 and did really enjoy my time with it while double dipping on Steam. Not sure I'll be doing that again here, but it is well worth playing for any who still haven't checked it out. I greatly prefer this gameplay wise and aesthetically to Eternal as, being older now and with less time to 'git gud', I find the latter a bit too frenetic and ironically, restrictive, despite the plethora of movement options and the higher skill ceiling attainable in that title. Lastly I will say that 'The Dark Ages' looks right up my alley with its - quite literally - more grounded gameplay and pseudo melee combat system, so I'm glad id aren't double dipping on what made Eternal so popular (yet divisive), but trying something a little bit more deliberate. So that's where I'm coming from. Play this!

A truly great FPS

Fluid combat, beautiful graphics, awesome weapons and flawlessly animated enemies? Doom is just about perfect and a pure joy to play. Sure, not much of a story to it but who cares when you rip a demon's head off?

I can't believe my eye's.

Thank you GOG. This is one of the best FPS games to day. For the asking price this is must have game. Good gory visuals. Excellent soundtrack. Excellent single players experience. Exceptionally good optimization. (Other games need to learn from this example).

I Played the Hell Outta This Game

Doom 2016 (from here on referred to as DOOM) takes everything you loved about the classic Doom 1 & 2 and turns it up to 666. The game is fast paced and encourages quick twitch timing for speed runs. However, the game is very forgiving, even on Ultra-Violence (very hard). You get enough ammo for each battle. You're never unprepared for what comes next. It's your skill that makes the difference. As difficulty ramps, the game teaches you what you need to know, then throws you in to apply it. Mastering the fundamentals and learning enemy patterns is key. If you die, it's because you need more practice. The bosses include the Cyber-Demon and Spider-Mastermind. Both have patterns that are read, rinse, repeat. Once you know the patterns, fighting them isn't that difficult. It's the heavies that cause problems because they're often paired with hordes of enemies. Balancing the fodder with the heavy is key to success. Like Doom and Doom 2, DOOM features tons of secrets. John Romero and his team had the philosophy that "If you can see it, you can get to it" for Doom. DOOM follows that mantra. I didn't find all the secrets, but the ones I saw and searched for were obtainable. DOOM isn't without its flaws. A fully upgraded shotgun is all you need for most of the game. The face that you can carry a single weapon to victory is a slight let-down. Contrastly, Doom Eternal requires players to use certain weapons on certain enemies. Given the choice between these two, I'd rather let players choose the weapon they want over forced weapon switching. DOOM is a fast paced, shooter that is fun to play. While Doom Eternal takes more of a platforming approach, I prefer DOOM's flat level design with a higher focus on combat over platforming. I have purchased DOOM (2016) on PS4, Switch, and now Gog. To buy a game for multiple platforms says a lot. I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND this title.
