Description
Doki Doki Gravity Dive is a Score Attack Shoot 'em Up with tiny solar systems as your playground
which are populated with tiny worlds and a singularity at their center.

Enemies relentlessly invade and it is up to you to keep them at bay. At least for as long as you can!

Each celestial body has its own gravitational pull and to stand even the slightest chance to survive the never ending onslaught, you have to adapt to changes in gravity quickly and throw concepts like up and down out the window!

So hop, fly, dodge, shoot and (hopefully) have fun!
...until the heat death of the universe.

Features
  • Lunchbreak-sized Arcade gameplay.
  • Dynamic gravity system which affects every moving object in the game. Even weapon projectiles!
  • 2 game modes: Arcade & Dimensions
  • 4 seasons, each providing their own starting difficulty and progression.
  • 17 enemy types, each with their own behavior and attack pattern.
  • Planets shaped like cubes, cylinders, pyramids, toruses and more form countless, unique solar systems.
  • Your ship is equipped with an upgradeable weapon, bombs, "EX" special attack, speed boost, jump and hover abilities to deal with everything the universe throws at you!
  • Visual style reminiscent of 1980s CGI. Lowpoly, textureless, clean.
  • Soundtrack by ChronoWolf which pushes you to your limits! Buy it on Bandcamp!

Inspiration

Doki Doki Gravity Dive was inspired by games like Geometry Wars, Devil Daggers and the gravity system of Super Mario Galaxy.

The visual style was inspired by both TRON, StarFox and 1980s CGI and chosen to be deliberately simple and as easy to read as possible considering the otherwise chaotic nature of the gameplay.

The kind of arcade game we dreamt of in the 80s

Doki Doki Gravity Drive is a 3rd-person arcade arena shmup that has you fighting off an invasion of dastardly polygons in an abstract solar system orbiting around a deadly black hole. The gameplay feels like a mix of everything from Defender to Tempest to Robotron with modern 3rd-person Shooter controls. Each round has you jump in at the edge of a random solar system. While in open space you have 6 degrees of freedom like Descent, but all the black hole will inevitably draw you to the center and your recharging pool of thrust is not bottomless, so you're safer landing on a planet, where you slide across the 3d surface with your ship and your shots curving around the edges (the game shows you shadows of enemies behind the edge. At any time you can hop off the surface of a planet and thrust to another one, just watch out for that black hole! Enemies are a diverse bunch, from enemy fighters who dogfight you, to swarm-generators, to laser wheels that cause the surface of a planet to pulse with deadly energies until they're destroyed. Enemies drop shield and weapon charges and you can power up your basic shot by several stages, but taking damage downgrades your weapon. You also have a spinning death-blossom attack with auto-charging ammo. And finally you have a limited supply of panic bombs that clear the surface of a planet. Graphics are Tron-style polygons with lots of bloom and it runs like butter. The 80s chiptune music is excellent. It's a Unity engine game. This feels like a lost 5th game by Vid Kidz. I'm very happy with it and heartily recommend it to lovers of coin-op arcade games of the 80s

Gravity is a hidden enemy....

I aggressively hunt down my enemies, try to use my bombs at the right time... Only a few enemies to go... strafe... fire.... map clear! NO!!! I wasn’t paying attention and got sucked into the black hole.... game over. This was my first few experiences into DDGD. I’m getting better now that I’m more aware of my movements and position relative to the black holes. There’s two game modes: get the highest score before dying (Arcade) or “clear the map” style (Dimensions) where you see how many worlds you can jump to before you dying. I feel more in control of my own destiny in Dimensions mode, it allows me to take a breather before jumping to the next map, so if you’re someone that needs a bigger break between waves use that mode. The difficulty selection of the Arcade mode means you can adjust the curve once you get good at the game, I wish more randomized permadeath machines would include this feature. Whether you play on mouse/keyboard or controller, you can remap anything you want (thank you from a not-inverted mouse movement player). Chronowolf’s music really fits the game. I haven’t gotten far on the difficulty scale yet but enemy AI appears well adjusted. Visually, there’s just enough effects to make the action exciting, but not too much that you can’t see what you’re doing even in intense moments. For someone that wanted to make this game to “see if I can make a game on my own”, I think you sir have succeeded in not just making a game, but making a good one, well done.

A Fun Arcade Experience

I've been looking forward to this game and I must say I'm not dissapointed. DDGD is a fun 3d SHMUP arcade game, that has you piloting a ship in battle against enemies and gravity itself. This is one of those games that you can start playing and loose an hour in because you're having fun. I would love to have a mobile version of this game to play while traveling or sitting in a waiting room (you would need a mobile controler addapeter for sure). The only issue I have is I wish the game had more. Its understandable because this game was made by one person, but I think a story mode or something like that would make this game perfect. + a fun experience that takes skill to master + fast paced action that you can get lost in + AMAZING SOUNDTRACK!!! - Would like to see more modes so I can spend more time with this great game

That ol' arcade magic

This game reminds me of back in the day... with my stack of quarters on the arcade cabinet, desperately hoping that THIS TIME I'll make it just a bit further and beat my high score. It harkens back to that simple geometry... that addictive "one more time and then I'll quit" sensation. At it's heart it seems simple, but I tell you there's a lot of depth and strategy... or as someone eloquently mashed up words.. STRATEGERY.. to this one. Multiple game modes based on the idea of seasons (Spring, Winter, etc) and a Dimensions mode keep gameplay fresh, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how fun it is to clear a planet, hop to another and get bogged down in heavy fire... only to have an enemy drop a fresh supply of baddies on that other world you weren't even paying attention to. Horde those bombs, build up your space lasers, and have at it... because the universe is depending on you!

Easy to learn; Hard to master

I have been playing the game for some time now, and only now do I feel qualified to talk about it. Do not let the simple graphics fool you, this game has a lot of depth. 6° of movement is amazing, when I started out, I just found myself dodging enemies and their projectiles, using the gravity of nearby planets and the black hole, to sling myself around the Solar system. However, fooling around with black holes will get you sucked into it, so for a while, I found myself hugging planets, instead. And, while losing the ability to roll is saddening, the planet's shape makes up for it. You can shoot a projectile around the planet, hitting an enemy you don't have a diverse line of sight to. Even when flying around, undocked to the planet, you can use the planet's gravity to curve your shots into enemies. The first time I pulled that off, it felt absolutely amazing. However, the enemies aren't slackers either. Each of them has a rather unique role, and a different attack pattern. It's easy to get swarmed on a planet, and escaping to a different one doesn't solve the problem, you need to fight back. It was around the time I finally understood the enemies, that I also stopped hugging planets. The movement just clicked in my head, and now I'm back to slinging myself using planet's gravity, to fire shots into an enemy that can only be attacked from behind, before it can turn around. Whether you're playing the Arcade mode (akin to survival mode, kill as fast as possible) or Dimensions mode(my favourite, since it gives me a finite amount of enemies to kill, and I can take breaks), the depth of the game's mechanics remains the same. Oh my god, I didn't even mention LOOT yet! Okay, so, killing enemies (preferably, in quick succession) makes them drop LOOT, which will heal you and upgrade your weapon. Taking damage, however, makes you lose LOOT. Combine the gravity-based movement tricks, with an incentive to quickly dispatch of the enemies, and you get me, yelling" Zoooom!"
