The hallway is long... Oh, the horror!
This game has about three good ideas (only one of which is a plot twist) stretched out across 1.5 hours of play time. I was curious about the psychological horror aspect, but the "horror" here is actually a pile of jump scares tossed in at random moments to the accompaniment of jarring chords. If you're a fan of "springloaded cat" scenes, this game may well interest you. I'm not a fan. The gameplay itself is, as promised, minimalist. The controls are straightforward. The music is one of the good ideas, and honestly the main reason for the second star. It creates atmosphere, fits the moods of scenes perfectly, and is the one genuinely creepy thing about this game. The puzzles... After solving each of the puzzles I found it made sense. There were a few "hunt the pixel" moments as your character needs to stand in exactly the right place to search the right container. The hangar puzzle really epitomizes this game for me. Trying to avoid spoilers here... There's a scene where you need to do something clever with a hangar. In order to do the clever thing, though, you need to find the hangar, which is in one particular closet that you need to pass about ten other closets to get to. You won't know that closet is there unless you run your character up to the wall in every scene on every map in what is a fairly large building. And that is where most of the playtime in the game comes from. Buildings are LARGE. Hallways are LONG. You will spend most of the time you're in this game running back and forth. That's not just time spent searching for the next puzzle (which can take time)-- even if you know what you're doing, objectives are generally at opposite ends of a long, long hallway that you will need to repeatedly traverse. The story is insipid; characters will regularly tell you the moral in case you miss it, and that moral is not novel or intriguing. It does, however, make a good conclusion to this review: "Distraint is bad."
