Classic games with cool extras

So I got this in a sale despite misgivings about the price (and already owning all these games). Even with a discount it still seems expensive for decades old emulated games plus behind the scenes material. Why not just keep updating this collection instead of re-releasing it for us to buy again? Having multiple console versions is nice but since we're on PC, why are the DOS versions not included? Especially since they've been delisted and can no longer be bought separately. Arguably in some cases DOS is the best version since it has better sound than Genesis. If you're going to have all these variations why not also have those? GREAT behind the scenes material - worth getting for this - especially on Aladdin and Jungle Book. Really showing the process of creating these games. Love "The Animation Process" and "Cutting Room Floor". Lion King is unfortunately missing a Game Art section, only has Videos + Movie art. Video controls on Making Of videos don't work properly. Cannot skip ahead by clicking on the timeline, only play/ pause. Rewind and Fast forward do nothing. Can't hide playback controls while watching, only half fades. Interesting material, but presentation could be better. Audio and video quality of some archive footage is not great, but this is understandable when it's sourced from VHS. Movie Art section is nice but limited, Lion King is just a few images. Expected there to be more, like a full art book. Aladdin and Jungle Book are more substantial. Soundtrack player is cool but why are these songs only available in-game and not included as MP3s like other GOG soundtracks? Overall, great classic Disney platform games that are still worth playing, but as a collection and archive of games history it could be better. Also a notable absence of other Disney games of the era like Maui Mallard and Hercules, which for the standard full price you would certainly expect.

Awful price for meh games

Yes, Aladdin is pretty nice, yes Jungle Book has nice artwork, and yes, Lion King is notoriously difficult, but overall, there are way better Disney tie-in games out there. On the one hand, it's nice of them to have ported the versions from other platforms (at least, I don't think they've packaged emulators with this?), but on the other, why only these three games? Where's Hercules, where's Little Mermaid (or whatever that side-scroller was called, where you played as the crab), where's Tarzan, where's Tigger's Honey Hunt, where's 102 Dalmatians, where's literally everything else?? Are they sold separately? Why? Why not make a proper collection? Gah! Get this when on sale, otherwise, don't bother.

Good games...

A nice jump back in time. That price is absolutely shameful though. Definitely not worth the price for such OLD games. Should be 10 at best.

Solid console platformers lost on PC

What are we talking about here? Please do yourself a favour and play these with a controller pad. I cannot imagine playing these with the keyboard/mouse. These are first and foremost console games.Yes, these games got their pc ports, but these ports are mostly derivative to the console versions they were originally tailored for. Aladdin, Capcom SNES, rating: 5 of 5 One of the very best Disney Capcom platformers from the 16bit era and the best game here.Extremely well playable, probably the most accessible title in this compilation. Not too hard, fun to play, great graphics and music. Aladdin,Virgin Games MD,rating: 4 of 5 This is a completely different title than the one above, foraging into the cinematic platformers genre, being closer to Prince of Persia than classic platformers. Incredibly stunning visuals, good music, but pretty difficult. Jungle Book,Virgin Games SNES and MD,rating: 3 of 5 This is a good, average platformer with good visuals and music. The difficulty is doable. Be aware that this is a game with huge jungle (duh!) levels, which offer little orientation , and, as you already might have guessed, force you to find an exit. Lion King, Westwood SNES and MD,rating: 2 of 5 This one has great graphics and music, but its difficulty will bring you to your knees. It is not Contra 3- or Dark Souls-level of hard, but that unfair Actraiser 2-level of hard. The incredibly frustrating platforming puzzles will make you tear your hair out. There is no amendment to that. The level design is similar to the one in Jungle Book. This is the least enjoyable title in this compilation. Overall: The games themselves are enjoyable. For that price, however, you can get yourself the original cartridges for the original consoles. This is not even a Sega or SNK gaming compilation, which offers dozens of awesome games, but rather 4 Disney themed games with two good (one outstanding), one okay and one frustratingly hard game. The price-value ratio here is inacceptable.

What does this do right?

Digital Eclipse is yet to produce a quality emulated product. The emulation is always inferior to free emulators that have been around for years. With commercial emulators optimized for a few games you would expect the opposite. DE's "1080p" is the laziest of upscales with fewer configuration options than you will find in any free emulator. The CRT "filters" just add static lines across the screen. They do NOT redraw interlaced images and look nothing like plugging old consoles into my Sony Trinitron TV. The overall product is about as poor as their Disney Afternoon Collection. The gameplay experience does not feel right. Something is just off to the point where it no longer feels like the original game. Are the rewind and gameplay videos that important to you? I suppose you also get the soundtrack with a GUI and a few videos you would expect to find on Youtube. There is just one good video game in this collection - the Genesis version of a Aladdin. You will have to have specific game nostalgia for anything else to be worth your time today. With the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection DE managed to create a beautiful homage to the games' history that made it worth owning despite the poor emulation. You can't say that with this one. The most glaring flaw is the missing games. Where is Aladdin in Nasira's Revenge? Now that game is so bad it's good. Where is a version of Aladdin Chess Adventures that easily runs on Win10+ with no DRM? I'd buy that. Where is the 90s cheese like Aladdin's Activity Center and Disney's Math Quest with Aladdin as fun extras? How about digital downloads for the Aladdin and Timon and Pumbaa TV series? These franchises have enough products that could be bundled together into a premium product easily worth the controversial asking price. This just isn't that premium product.
