Incredibly rich

Never played anything like this before. The freedom of choice in this title is something others sorely lack in modern gaming. I couldnt stop and wanted more once the credits rolled at the end.

Wonderful. Amazing. Planescape.

For 10+ years I looked for a game that will cause as much emotion, has such a deep story, great characters and soul in it. And not a single RPG even came close, even those who tried to become like one. They all failed, and I thought there is no way anyone can possibly overcome it. And here it is, Disco Elysium. A Deep, well written game, with meaning, lore, realistic characters, music that just hits the right spot. I waited for this game for around a decade, and damn, where have you been all this time. One hundred drunk detectives out of ten. Play it. Feel it. Cry in the corner if you need to, fuckupatoo.

The next "Planescape: Torment"

With Disco Elysium I had the same mind blowing experience when I played Planescape: Torment for the first time. I like the crazy and lovely characters, the skill system and the fresh setting and I hope there'll be a successor one day. For me one of the best RPGs so far, I don't regret one minute playing! There were a few minor bugs sometimes (the cursor didn't turn back into normal after grabbing loot. Items in the inventory disappeared, but were still there. Restarting the game solved that), but besides that the Final Cut version runs stable. RECOMMENDED!

GOD-LEVEL DIALOGUE RPG

Summary: this is the only game in my 30 yrs of playing that I finished and immediately started again and 100% enjoying. Experience is planescape torment without combat + oxenfree without characters. Very mature themes and really good. Positive: - Presentation (art, sound, voice) is 100%. This isn't just Baldur's game reskinned - the art direction is deep and thoughtful - Story design / narration - this isn't just a dialogue tree game with 2 characters. The main character's thoughts (and skill points) are actually secondary characters and Kim is kind of the foundation/root. So in a traditional top down RPG you have central character and several minor characters, who support the story. If you don't have a minor character in your party you don't get their input/actions. In DE if you don't have a certain skill level you don't get that skill's input. So changing your build changes the game significantly. - There's literally no combat, it's replaced with dialogues. My first character had 2hp. - The main character is awesomely designed Negatives: - Kind of hard to explain this but the main plot is a critical path. It does not change, and your role is to unfold the plot via your character build. So you can be a really bad detective and still finish - this is by design but I think that's the only major weakness of the game. - the first 2-3 hours of the game, players need more hand holding.

Top 5 out of thousands

I have acquired thousands of games over my nearly four decades of life. Very few remain in my memory long after finishing them. Most are simply pleasant clones of greater games that came before. For instance: Betrayal at Krondor- for its narrative and character building. Rome Total War- for its ease of use and brilliant strategy gameplay Fallout- for its post apocalyptic feel and weight of choices Fallout 3- for its amazing 3D open worlds Disco Elysium was amazing. Perhaps best was the narrative - the story is largely advanced by your characters inner monologue-which is directly influenced by how you build your character. My guy was totally logical so that is the game I got. If I reroll as a psychological basket case that will be a totally different game. Or rather the narrative will be presented to me very differently and dialog options will be different and likely I would get to experience different things. This brings me to character building. At first I thought the system was mental. Where is my familiar strength, dexterity and intelligence? What the F is “espirit de corps” and “shivers?” Where do I put my points?! Over time I learned and realized the “old” systems simply inform how your character fights. The Disco system relegates how your Character solves problems. Speaking of problems - I never thought I would be looking at two dialogue options, trying to decide which to pick, while my heart begins to race. What I decide will affect this world in a real way. The world itself is purely fiction with obvious references to the real world. The way the world presents itself to your character is not really new (amnesia is how many rpgs start) but it is done with such delegate gradualness. This works because the world, while like our own, is different in weird mystical ways that are surprising to the player as well as the character. This game is art. This game is fun. This game is important. For the reasons stated above it is in the top 5 of thousands.
