An innovative RPG

In Disco Elysium you incarnate a detective after a really bad hangover. You lost your memory. The main plot will revolve around solving a murder case but you may also opt in to piece back what you did in the past few days or solve several quests, some of which feel odd to perform for a detective. The game is centered around mature themes, livened up by humour. This largely sets aside some RPG codes such as the usual combat focus and choose to rely entirely on skill checks and dialogues. There are a lot of checks which will open thoughts or extra dialogue options to shape up how your character reacts to situations. This goes further with the thought cabinet feature: depending on dialogue choices you will get to select some thoughts that will provide boni and mali while opening up some more dialogue choices. For exemple you may get to think yourself as one of the "cop types". I really enjoyed the roleplay potential. I find it hard to impersonate characters with D&D alignment system but here the wealth of ideas and opportunities really helps. Skill description for exemple all come with supposed malus at high skill level. Admitedly I didn't felt these malus, however it inspired me to roleplay. My character specialized in composure (the ability to hide his feelings and read others) so I decided that he would always refuse to acknowledge being wrong. When prompted to give my opinion on things I had no clue about (which happens a lot when you lose memory!) it would lead me to digging myself in deeper in ridiculous lies and bad faith answers. Thought cabinet and in-game situations helped develop this aspect. As a little downside the main quest line was built oddly. This largely relies on passing white checks (skill checks you can retry, one condition being to increase the relevant skill). Checks can be made easier by talking, exploring so there's no hard lock however it led me to juggle with equipment to boost skills and spend points on skills I didn't want to.

Made me rethink writing in games

Disco Elysium is a curse. To me, every other narrative video game has to be compared to this masterpiece, and nothing comes close.

Very Mixed Feelings...

This is not at all what I was expecting for a "role-playing game"--it feels much more like a classic point-and-click adventure game, which really is not my kind of genre--yet it is strangely engrossing and extremely hilarious at times. I am hardly very far into the game, so I will see how long I can persist: it feels a bit glitchy with the camera at times on my MacBook Pro. Thus, while this is not at all what I bargained for, at $10 it was a pretty good deal and I feel tempted to see it through to the end. I feel simultaneously pushed away and pulled in.

Finally, faith in RPG is restored.

It seems that it would take some indie finnish team to finally have some breath of fresh air in RPG genre. TLDR: Buy it. This is the game, the game of 2019 (and few years before), the game that I hope will become a new standard in RPG, as 20 years ago Planescape: Torment became one - Id even say that "the king is dead, long live the king". Disco Elysium is a hardcore rpg, it takes a lot from tabletop games and even features them in the game world. Characters are interesting, deep, mischievous and scheming. Its a refreshing change that finally you have to think WHAT TO SAY, instead just spewing through all the dialog options. You can make mistakes, some light some dramatically severe but its fun, just like in life. RPG system is innovative, choices are dramatic and yield real-life dillemas that took some self-convincing. The ideas behind the thought cabinet and skill development and its impact on game world amounts to the genius-like levels, Ive never seen something like that. In a world that most of the games became just 1 thing cloned countless times, THIS is the new quality. And oh my god, this game is funny. Id ask you, when was the last time that you were literally laughing out loud at the screen ? Yeah, too long for me as well. Here, its a given - when main guy is asked about his name and I saw the dialog options I couldnt believe the dev's wit and I had to stop playing for few minutes :D Oh my Im so glad that this was created. I love this game. For a few years I started feeling that there are less and less valuable games and this one, really, restores the faith in the genre. Guys from Obsydian should really step up their game (after mediocre The Outer Worlds), because there are new kids on the block. Thank you. P.S. Please, dont save-scum. Game looses a bit of its edge when you become all-powerful.
