What's your Cop-o-Type?

Until Disco Elysium came to my life, I never realized I desired to become a drunken, drugged-up mentally deranged cop, that simultaneously preached the benefits of libertarian capitalism and radical Marxism, while proclaiming that End Is Nigh. Now, I no longer have that Disco shaped hole in my life. As for the review itself. Visually the game is pretty but not impressive or hard on the hardware. It's very impressionistic, which fits the theme of a washed-up cop, recovering from a bender that gave him amnesia. The gameplay is relatively simple. Time passes when talking and reading books, otherwise, it stands still. There are a few days for you to finish your investigations but most quests don't have a strict time limit. You have Skills Check you can pass. Some skills are Once Per Lifetime (Red checks) and Once Until I Level the Skill (White checks). There are critical fails and successes that you can win regardless of your skill level, just don't bet on those two sixes. Your skills are also characters that will drive most of the story, providing hints and commentary. Be careful about leveling them too much or they might decide to take over. There are also "Upgrades" AKA Thoughts in your Thought Cabinet, where you can internalize certain thoughts, to get a permanent boost. While internalizing your thoughts you may experience some adverse effects. Also, some thoughts may unlock some White checks. Not all thoughts are created equal, but you can discard them, at the cost of 1 Skill point. A skill point you could have used to level up one of your relevant skills. Additionally, there are different items you can equip, that can help you pass some skill checks, but it very quickly weers into absurd. But forget about the review. The reason this game is great is that its writing is stellar. No, I take that back. The writing is a neutron star going supernova. It along with a great soundtrack carries this game to be my personal Game Of The Year.

Absolute masterpeice on many levels

Disco Elysium gives me so much nostalgia for the point and click games i grew up on. Yet the game does so much more, The writing is some of the best i've seen across multiple mediums, not just games. The artstyle is bleak and beautful. Every character feels fully fleshed out, fully realised like reading about any character in a book. The humour is non stop and has had me taking so many screen of hilarious lines. On top of all the amazing writing and the nostalgic point and click feel you have an amazing RPG. In fact one of the most meaning full RPG trees i think i've ever experience in a game that has more than just overpowering affects on your character, It's all about balance. TLDR: This game is an absolute masterpeice, And deserves ever second of your time to see it through.

Great, philosphical and timely

Great plot. Great dialogue. Great story. Great sense of humour. Stable on my computer. Not much in terms of gameplay, sometimes feels clunky (which is ok, if you consider role playing a total drunk and drug abuser), but that is ok in the genre. I'm 35 and thoroughly enjoyed the humorous and adult approach to many current issues - the game provokes you to make choices based on your beliefs. Facist / communist / racist / capitalistic / artistic etc. and then shows you (which is great IMO) that there are no perfect decisions in life and some situations have no 'proper' way out of them. One thing that hampered my first few moments (almost to the point of giving up) were low volition/endurance points - remember to get your first few points into them to have at least three for each. Volumetric shit compressor will help low volition characters, so internalise that and you are pretty much good to go. Getting into the bottom of it all is most enjoyable - there is a hidden and unexpected plot within the obvious occurences. Remember that failures are often enjoyable in this game and lead to funny situations. PS get into the large container at the docks, loved the concept and what is hidden there :)

1st rate game in every respect

What a well written story/dialogue choice game. Great art. No bugs. Very different way to advance your character. This game needs a sequel. It would be a crime (pun intended) if this was not followed up with 2.0
